Educational Requirements for the Position
Bachelor’s degree in Education or closely related field. Master’s degree preferred. Three years of experience in teaching and/or academic counseling or related field. Evidence of initiative and experience in higher education, medical education, education, a health care field, or professional school preferred.
Nature & Purpose of Position
Serves the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine by providing academic counseling related to the development of effective learning skills, study strategies, time management, and test preparation on an individual and group basis.
Primary Responsibilities
Assists students with identifying potential learning barriers, responsible for monitoring student academic performance, and assists with the peer tutoring program. Provides various workshops for students to assist with test anxiety, time management, organizational skills, stress management, and exploration of learning preferences. Teaches students how to generate study plans that increase academic success. Develops individualized strategies for more effective learning, test-taking, and remediation strategies. Identifies and counsels both academic and non-academic at-risk students. Works with students to determine barriers that hinder academic performance and teaches students how to overcome those barriers. Assesses individual student’s needs and teaches students how to interpret assessments and make necessary adjustments in study habits and plans. Connects students to campus resources. Creates electronic student success resources and makes recommendations for additional academic support resources. Maintains electronic files for all students that utilize academic support services. Collaborates with the SHSU main campus to share programs and services that support student learning and success. Assists with the training and coordination of the peer-tutoring programs. Works in collaboration with maintaining and assigning students, advisors, and mentors to their learning communities. Prepares reports and assists with examination accommodations as needed. Provides instruction to faculty and students related to test-taking skills and test preparation. Works with faculty to help them become better advisors to students in their courses. Teaches faculty and staff how to recognize students who are at-risk academically or non-academically and how to submit an early alert concern. Helps students prepare for licensure examinations using best practices. Participates in appropriate committees and activities to gain a better understanding of the educational process. Assists with recruitment and interacts with faculty, staff, and students. Conducts research to track the success of academic support efforts across the continuum from undergraduate medical education (UME) to graduate medical education (GME). Performs other related duties as assigned.

This position is located at the College of Osteopathic Medicine facility in Conroe, Texas.
