Educational and Experience Requirement:
High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent. Technical/vocational training related to job duties would be helpful. Two years as an air conditioning mechanic required. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.
Nature & Purpose of Position:
Provides service and maintenance of an apprentice level skill on heating and air-conditioning systems, plants, boilers and all equipment associated with the University campus. Works under general supervision of journeyman HVAC Technician and is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of various heating ventilation and air conditioning systems, boilers, plants, and various refrigeration equipment across the University campus.
Primary Responsibilities:
Assists with new equipment installation, maintenance, service and repair of air conditioning systems, equipment, boilers, and refrigeration units. Repairs, replaces, or adjusts worn or broken parts, condensers, compressors, water, and/or vacuum pumps. Tests and inspects units and equipment. Provides preventive maintenance, service, and installation of boilers, chillers, air handling equipment, various pumps, and related equipment. Assists with the installation and services of all electrical and control devices as well as general HVAC shop work and coordination. Reviews, schedules and records data in the work order system as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications:
Requires familiarity with all types of air conditioning, air handlers, refrigerators, coolers, and related equipment. Working conditions are considered fair, but involve more than average (25%-50%) exposure to weather, electrical hazards, narrow quarters, noise, vibrations, dust, heat, chemical exposure, etc. Will be required to be locally available for on call 24 hours per day, on a rotational basis every 7-14 days for emergencies as needed by department.
Position requires driving and operating a university vehicle; therefore, a valid Texas driver license and driving record acceptable to the university’s insurance carrier is required. Uniforms and identification badges are provided by the University according to departmental policy.
Up to 20% of this position, over the fiscal year during off-peak periods, may be performed remotely as determined by the supervisor.
