Job Summary
Under general direction from the Manager of Custodial Services, monitors areas of custodial services operations and staff performance; procures materials and services; oversees and monitors results of departmental projects and programs; assists with development and implementation of departmental policies, procedures, and goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Works collaboratively with Manager of Custodial Services, Custodial Supervisors and Lead Custodians in conducting scheduled inspections of work assignments, projects, and safety activities to ensure outcomes are to Department and University Standards
- Works collaboratively with Manager of Custodial Services, Custodial Supervisors, and Lead Custodians to establish unit goals, objectives, procedures, scheduling, and best practices based on core values.
- Assist Manager with enforcement of policies, procedures, and implementing progressive discipline procedures to address performance and conduct issues.
- Assist in oversight of custodial department equipment. Includes oversight of employee vehicle weekly inspections; establishment of custodial equipment locations, monitor and identifying equipment in need of repair and ensuring equipment is cleaned after use.
- Promote Green Cleaning practices to reduce health and environmental risks and support the sustainability goals of the Department and University.
- Work collaboratively with Manager, Custodial Supervisors, and Lead Custodians on preventive maintenance; and with other Facilities Management managers to resolve building issues, reduce urgent/emergency request and promote common goals.
The selected candidate must have knowledge of working in a union environment and understanding contract language. The selected candidate must possess the capability to deal effectively with individuals and groups on and off campus, including administrators, managers, staff, customers, and peers. Must have the ability to analyze complex problems and situations and make appropriate recommendations, understand complex relationships of individual campus department needs, restrained budgets and external requirements. Must possess exceptional communication and leadership skills. Working knowledge and experience with work order control system. Working knowledge and experience with IBM or compatible computer. Working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office software, i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to organize and plan work and projects including handling multiple priorities. Experience working in a university or large institutional setting. Solid work record.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and a minimum of one (1) year of related experience required.
Preferred Experience:
Experience relating to the custodial function within an educational or similar institution is highly. Five (5) years of experience in custodial maintenance management. Six (6) years of experience supervising a team of at least eight people. Three (3) years of experience preparing and providing training programs for a department. Experience in controlling supplies, equipment, and labor costs within established budgets. Must be willing to work night shifts and adjust work schedule to meet operational needs for Department and University. Solid foundation of documenting staff performance. Experience in custodial maintenance management at a college, university, or multi-facility complex. Experience managing a multi-shift operation. Supervisory experience in a unionized setting. Familiarity with LEED For Existing Buildings: O&M and Green Cleaning. Experience working with computerized maintenance management systems.
Licenses / Certificates
Valid California driver's license required. (Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver's License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate. Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.)

Compensation
Hiring Range: $5,722 - $8,583 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
