Job Summary

Custodians perform a wide range of custodial and related duties for assigned campus areas.

Work assignments typically include some or all of the following: clean and maintain assigned areas, including such activities as dusting and cleaning all surfaces; removing trash and recyclables; cleaning and disinfecting restrooms and replenishing supplies; cleaning glass doors, windows, and blinds; cleaning off graffiti; cleaning furniture and upholstery; cleaning light fixtures; polishing woodwork and metal surfaces; cleaning stairwells, walkways, and elevators; and performing general housekeeping; clean and maintain campus floors, including sweeping; dry and/or wet mopping; stripping, sealing, waxing, and polishing floors; vacuuming; spot and full cleaning of carpets; and use and care for powered floor cleaning equipment; provide custodial support, including activities such as responding to custodial/cleaning emergencies; gathering and delivering recyclables to areas of central aggregation; replacing lamps in light fixtures; safeguarding assigned areas from unauthorized use and access by locking and unlocking doors and windows; arranging and setting up furniture, equipment, and related items; and making minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and furniture, such as oiling doors, tightening screws, and replacing foots on chairs and tables; provide general campus support by reporting facility repair needs identified during custodial rounds; checking fire extinguishers to ensure they are full; serving as a special event custodian; and participating in campus event set-up and clean up, including moving bleachers; identify and organize necessary work materials and equipment, which may include loading and unloading cleaning supplies, and materials; operate and maintain appropriate hand and powered equipment and tools, supplies, and materials to perform assigned duties.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Ability to consistently report to work on time prepared to perform the duties of the position, required. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Ability to work effectively and productively as part of a team, required. Experience with working with a diverse group of individuals and multicultural university environment, required. Working knowledge of standard safe work practices, required. Ability to provide excellent customer service to the Campus community, vendors, and other outside agencies. Skill in performing customer service in a polite and timely fashion: ability to identify what customer needs and reroute him/her to the correct department; ability to relay customer requests and complaints accurately and appropriately. Provide timely custodial services, including lifting, moving, and transporting chemicals and or equipment, within buildings and work assignments. Ability to read labels on cleaning solutions, written directions and work schedules required. Ability to interact politely and courteously with University staff, faculty, and guests required. Working knowledge of fundamental custodial procedures required. Ability to recognize when guestroom(s) have been adequately prepared for an incoming guests, can be trained. Ability to recognize when public areas are neat and clean to established standards, can be trained. Skill in operating a variety of industrial and or custodial equipment including buffers, waxers, scrubbers, polishers, mop, brooms, and or vacuum cleaners required. Ability to properly use and monitor supply of equipment and supplies, required. Working knowledge of carpet and floor care techniques, can be trained. Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 lbs., required. Ability to work independently or with others as directed or assigned, required. Ability to work overtime, holidays, evenings, or weekends as assigned in order to meet operational needs. Ability to perform various custodial duties that involve walking, standing, climbing stairs and ladders, stooping and crouching. Ability to maintain proper inventory of linens, cleaning supplies, amenities and other items.

Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience

Solid work history. Valid CA Driver's License preferred.
Physical Summary

Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.

Compensation

The salary range for this classification is $3,338 to $4,490 per month.
Time Base

This is a Temporary, Emergency Hire, and/or hourly intermittent appointment. No probationary period. No permanent status is granted. The purpose of this recruitment is to produce a pool of qualified applicants to call upon for temporary appointments. Successful candidates may be appointed from a few days up to 6 months depending on the assignment. Temporary appointments may be canceled or extended at any time.
