Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Facilities Projects Supervisor, Building Trades, the Supervising Carpenter supervises and works with one or more groups or crews of skilled journey-level carpenters and semi-skilled assistants in the performance of general carpentry maintenance work and/or new construction and major remodeling projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepares cost estimates and laying out jobs. Completes work orders as needed. Orders supplies and materials required for jobs. Assigns and inspects progress, cleanliness and completion of jobs and projects of the shop.
- Responsible for operation, proper adjustment, and general maintenance of all power equipment and tools in the Carpenter Shop. Responsible for the safe operation of equipment and for enforcing general safety regulations in the shop and at the job site.
- Works from blueprints, sketches, and work orders on various types of construction.
- Supervises a crew of journey-level carpenters and other semi-skilled personnel. Plans and directs the work of the Carpenter Shop. Determine and coordinate staffing, material and equipment needs for multiple jobs and projects; and ensure accuracy and maintenance of work orders in PlanOn.
Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in both rough and finish carpentry. Thorough knowledge of the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California applicable to carpentry and the California State Building Codes. Ability to instruct, direct, and coordinate the assignments of a small crew. Ability to operate hand-operated power carpentry tools. Ability to prepare working sketches of the job and estimate of needed materials and job costs. Ability to read blueprints and to work from and interpret plans and specifications. Ability to recognize lumber types and grades. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports. Good interpersonal and oral communication skills and ability to represent the department.

Education and Experience
Equivalent to a high school diploma and two or more years of experience as a journey-level carpenter, including one to two years in a lead/supervisory capacity required.
Licenses / Certificates

Compensation
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
CSU Classification Salary Range: $6,464 - $8,196 per month

Time Base
Full-time temporary position for one (1) year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
