Educational Requirements for the Position

Associates degree in a related field from accredited program. Two years of experience in a clinic or hospital setting, or related experience. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.

EITHER: Completion of a Certified Medical Association (CMA) program from a school accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). Currently licensed as a Certified Medical Assistant by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

Completion of a Certified Medical Lab Technician program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) and currently licensed as a Certified Medical Lab Technician through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Phlebotomy training required.

Nature & Purpose of Position

Assists with daily operations of moderate complexity lab in the Student Health Center under the direction of the Medical Technologist Lab Supervisor.

Primary Responsibilities

Maintains patient and staff confidentiality in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations. Works under the direction of the lab supervisor and clinic medical director. Daily tasks may include phlebotomy- collecting and processing of blood samples, performing quality control checks, and performing CLIA waived testing. Additional duties include inventory management, stocking supplies, reporting, proficiency in using electronic medical records system and order entry system. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications

Must be extremely accurate in following written and oral instructions regarding patient care. Must be able to communicate effectively with outside medical facilities, students, other university departments, and visitors. Must be familiar with and able to maintain infection control standards as set out in Universal Precautions protocols. Alertness and careful attention is required to prevent injury to self or others. Must have a positive attitude toward change, professional growth, and team work. Must have proficient computer skills. All documentation is recorded in electronic health record. Must work efficiently due to busy schedules. Must work within the scope of their certification and continue education as required. Yearly training and competency testing is required. Work schedules may flex to accommodate late evening lab courier.
