The Office of Research helps to facilitate life-saving biomedical research at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Nine distinct units provide specialized support to meet the administrative needs of our investigators and research staff. Together we coordinate, regulate, and monitor research studies as well as provide high quality services for investigative teams. The MCW Libraries supports all institutional missions and partners by providing access, support, and specialized services for researchers, students, healthcare workers, and community members.

Reporting to the Director, MCW Libraries, the Assistant Director, Public Services & Education, provides dynamic and innovative leadership of the libraries’ instruction programs, user services, and clinical information services to the MCW community and outreach services to the wider community.

The Assistant Director, Public Services & Education is responsible for the assessment, development and implementation of strategies for curricular integration of library services at all MCW campuses, tailoring of services for the clinical setting at partner institutions, integrating the librarians in the research environment, and overseeing outreach services to the community.

Participating on the administrative team, this position supports the director in long-term planning and high-level management of the MCW Libraries, including recommending long and short-term strategies for library services, revising and implementing policies and practices, providing assessment of library services, with an emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The ideal candidate for this role understands that underestimated and under-resourced groups have been marginalized in higher education and strives to rectify current imbalances.

This position supervises 2 clinical services librarians and 3 reference librarians.

Primary Functions

  1. Recruit, train, mentor, evaluate, and supervise librarians and library staff supporting public service and educational functions as they support the MCW missions.
  2. Expand, promote, support, train and assess a library liaison program to identify information needs and to promote library services and resources to all library stakeholders, fostering a culture of self-reliance.
  3. Initiate and manage the planning, development, implementation and assessment of innovative user services and programs, including models that support the research enterprise.
  4. Lead the library’s curriculum integration efforts in undergraduate and graduate medical education, and other MCW academic programs, including developing, implementing and assessing a competency-based library instruction program at all MCW campuses and affiliated partners.
  5. Manage:

    2. Clinical library service and branch libraries
    3. Systematic reviews service
    4. Instructional programs and curriculum integration
    5. Review and assessment of services
  6. Oversee:
    1. Circulation Service
    2. Outreach Service
  7. Cultivate partnerships and collaborations with:
    1. MCW faculty and researchers
    2. Partner hospitals
    3. Other Library stakeholders
    4. NNLM Region 6
  8. Monitor emerging trends in public service and library instruction and suggest courses of action; plan for future needs in the areas of staffing, funding and additional service requirements; provide leadership in the assessment of reference and library instruction. Maintain current knowledge of the trends and issues in higher education, research practice and health care.
  9. Contribute and provide leadership to staff on the overall development and innovation of the library and the profession by participating in library, campus, institutional, state, regional or national meetings, committees, workgroups and task forces and other professional development activities.
  10. Provide reports including statistical data and key performance indicators and perform other duties as assigned.

Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.

Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite, specifically Word and Excel database technology.

Direct Reports (Titles): 2 Clinical Services Librarians, 3 Information Services Librarians

Collaborates with (Titles): Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Graduate Medical Education, CTSI, hospital and institutional partners, key library and education users, and individual faculty members, library peers and staff


Appropriate experience may be substituted on equivalent basis

Minimum Required Education: Master’s degree or higher in library/information science from an ALA Accredited institution or equivalent

Minimum Required Experience: 8 or more years of experience

Preferred Experience: Supervising librarians or complex projects in an academic or medical setting; demonstrated evidence of strong leadership and mentoring skills, experience with biomedical or health-related databases, demonstrated service orientation and the ability to build and sustain relationships; possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience working with diverse groups to reach common goals. Flexibility and adaptability to work in an evolving environment.

Preferred Field of Study: Academic degree in a science or related field

Certification/Licensure: AHIP
