In the role of Research Scientist I working in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Our Research Scientist supervises and independently and collaboratively perform studies to advance the goals of the principal investigator’s research focused on pain in individuals with Sickle Cell Disease. Analyzes data, compiles results and monitors quality control processes to ensure integrity of research focused on microbiome, immune system, and inflammatory pathways and how these collectively impact pain biology in individuals with sickle cell disease.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute independent research projects that complement ongoing work in the laboratory focused on investigating sickle cell disease pain. Current projects include but are not limited to clinical and translational research focused on the intestinal microbiome, inflammatory pathways, and immune system contributions to acute and chronic pain in individuals with sickle cell disease.
  • Develop and perform routine and complex protocols for research programs.
  • Coordinate research study activities: lead and manage projects.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring quality activities, especially surrounding data collection.
  • Collaborate with principal investigators in determining study design and performing statistical analyses necessary for research activities.
  • Perform and develop routine and complex computational and database methods for implementation using statistical software. May serve as primary statistician for area.
  • Develop new methodologies for research lab procedures.
  • Participate in meetings with principal investigator and research staff and evaluate/interpret the validity of data, develop methodologies, plan and write manuscripts and external grant applications, evaluate lab procedures.
  • Assist in developing new grant applications to secure future funding for laboratory.
  • May oversee the work of laboratory personnel including training and development as well as daily work direction/delegation/prioritizing.
  • Assist in training of students, residents and fellows
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge – Skills – Abilities

  • Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies. Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol. Knowledge of current technological developments/trends including hands-on experience with human subject research and database creation and analysis. Experience with gene expression analyses, computational biology, genomics and bioinformatics desired. Experience with patient reported outcomes also desired. Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific clinical research projects.
  • Data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills.

Preferred Schedule:
Full-time role with expectations for coverage during core business hours and flexibility required as necessary to accommodate business needs.


Position Requirements:

  • Minimum Required Education: PhD in a scientific field
  • Minimum Required Experience: No experience required

  • Preferred Experience/Field: Microbiome, immunology, neuroimmunology, pain research, genomic analysis, or a field that complements the above areas of focus such as genomics or microbiology.
