Job Description

The Physics Laboratory Technician will maintain orderliness of departmental work areas; prepare equipment and other materials for scientific teaching laboratories; make repairs to laboratory equipment as needed, assist professional personnel in keeping records, take inventory, aid in purchasing; and carry out detailed oral and written instructions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Assists in the preparation of equipment and materials for labs
  2. Assists in maintenance of departmental supplies
  3. Advises supervisor of supply and equipment needs in a timely manner
  4. Maintains orderliness of departmental work areas
  5. Assists in maintenance of security and safety of work areas
  6. Reports maintenance, security and housekeeping problems to supervisor in a timely manner
  7. Records and reports arrival of incoming equipment with supervisor
  8. Assists in equipment repairs
  9. Assists in purchasing
  10. Assists in maintenance of equipment and inventories
  11. Runs work-related errands on and off campus
  12. Assists with mechanical aspects of student evaluation, advising and registration and other teaching-related activities
  13. Performs other related work as required

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in laboratory work in a recognized engineering, clinical, medical, hospital, chemical, water quality, public health, biological, bacteriological, marine sciences or materials testing laboratory, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.


  1. An associate degree or higher with a major in physics, medical technology, chemistry, bacteriology, food science and technology, environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, wastewater technology, oceanography or the biological sciences may be substituted for the required experience.
  2. The successful completion of one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, education toward a degree at a recognized medical or dental school may be substituted for the required experience.
  3. The successful completion of training in a recognized school or hospital course or an American Medical Association (AMA) approved training program for laboratory technicians or medical technologists may be substituted for the required experience.
  4. Registration as a medical technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the International Society for Clinical Laboratory Technicians or American Medical Technologists or as a bacteriologist by the National Registry of Microbiologists may be substituted for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Science or engineering background
  • Prior technical or professional experience in physics laboratory work
  • Demonstrated/documented experience in making repairs to laboratory equipment

Laboratory Technicians work exposed to the harmful effects of chemicals, gases, fumes, inflammable and pathogenic materials and dangerous equipment; work varied shifts, weekends, holidays and nights and stand for prolonged periods of time.
