Educational Requirements for the Position

Bachelor’s degree in related field. Master’s degree preferred in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Forensic Sciences, or in a related field. Three years related experience. Must have previous experience with maintaining and operating Scanning Electron and Confocal Microscopes. Two years of experience in microscopy laboratory management preferred. Experience in a laboratory at a university, college or experience in a related field preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

Nature & Purpose of Position

Coordinates the use and maintenance of advanced microscopy equipment for the Department of Biological Sciences.

Primary Responsibilities
Manages and maintains the Department of Biological Sciences Microscopy Laboratory. Supports existing research programs at the University. Develops and grows microscopy fee for service for external entities (public and private). Maintains accounting for costs and revenue. Teaches one class as needed. Performs a wide variety of routine and advanced technical tasks. Maintains and schedules for faculty and student access to the scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray defractor, confocal, and digital imaging suite to include a Keyence digital stereoscope, and Olympus research compound scope. Performs routine maintenance of all teaching scopes. Interprets and applies routine, but moderately complex directives. Requires moderate judgement, attention, and care to tasks to include scheduling, establishing procedures, maintaining inventory, and ordering supplies. Performs equipment maintenance and repairs. Complies with sanitation and compliance with University and government procedures. Follows government procedures, standards, rules and regulations. Recommends new and emerging microscopy tools. Provides training to students and faculty on resource utilization. Provides weekly activity logs to the departmental chair. Prepares samples and assists in faculty and student research. Researches and evaluates new technologies to reduce cost, improve performance, and enhance management and reporting. Responsible for data management of Digital Image Files. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications

Requires contact with vendors who provide supplies and materials for lab activities. Must be familiar with common laboratory equipment and instruction and research curriculum. Must be able to follow oral and written instruction. Requires working a modified schedule to accommodate classes and special projects. Requires frequent contact with students, staff and faculty. Occasional teaching responsibilities in microscopy techniques will be required. Skills in SEM, TEM, Confocal, and digital imaging suite, Keyence digital stereoscope, and an Olympus research compound scope preferred. Requires communication and interpersonal skills. Includes opportunities for training and professional development. Attention and care is required in the performance of duties to prevent injury to self or others.
