Job Summary
Under the general direction of the University Police Department (UPD), this position will plan and publish original and curated content to the UPD's media channels in a strategic manner to meet established objectives. Will be responsible for all public affairs communications for UPD and may sometimes support comm0unications for the Division of Administration and Finance (DAF). The incumbent should be able to develop strategies that enhance stakeholder engagement through public relations, while also monitoring media channels for emerging issues and necessary responses. Will be responsible for writing communications for various campus publications regarding UPD activity and disseminating information to reach intended audiences.

We are looking for a candidate who can communicate in a way that promotes awareness and understanding of systemic oppression and racism faced by individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds. The ideal candidate will possess excellent writing skills, with experience in developing web content, social media, and stories for publication. They should also have a sensitivity to the political and cultural climate and be able to advise on publication and media strategies.
The candidate should have a comprehensive understanding of communication, public affairs, media, and marketing theories and concepts to develop and execute communication strategies and plans that promote and position the UPD. They should also have an expert knowledge of university and UPD communication objectives, and the ability to translate them into effective communication and media campaigns.
Additionally, the candidate should have a thorough knowledge of applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to publications and the news media. They should be skilled in networking and interpersonal communication, with strong consultative and persuasive abilities to work with internal and external constituents and the media.
The ideal candidate should have expert writing and editorial skills, demonstrated organizational abilities, and be able to proactively resolve problems and issues. They should be proficient in the use of administrative computing systems, Microsoft Office, and other relevant software applications. They should also possess the ability to use market research to enhance the impact of communication strategies and campaigns, as well as update and organize the website using the latest technology.
Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in a related field and three (3) years of professional writing and editing experience. Social media engagement experience preferred. A valid CA driver's license required. Livescan fingerprint records check required.
Licenses / Certificates
Must meet employment requirements established by P.O.S.T. for civilian employees and state law. A valid driver's license is required for this position. Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

Compensation
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,338 - $5,653 per month

Time Base
Full-time, regular position. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
