Job Description
Director of Legislative Affairs: Working close with the Senior Vice President for Policy and Government Relations, the Director of Legislative Affairs will assist in developing and advancing HACU's legislative affairs and relations with Congress, the Administration, and federal agencies. She/he supports the coordination of legislative relations and activities and works in collaboration with other HACU staff to enhance relationships with government agencies, policy centers, Hispanic and other minority organizations, and higher education associations. The incumbent will be responsible for tracking and analyzing legislation, regulations, other policy proposals, hearings, announcements, and other government actions pertinent to HACU and our HSI membership. He/she will be the primary lead in successfully planning and executing the annual Capitol Forum activities, managing the Capitol Forum mobile app, updating content for all of HACU’s advocacy platforms, and supporting HACU’s ongoing advocacy efforts, and co-managing ongoing advocacy efforts. Bachelor’s degree required and experience in federal relations and policy analysis, preferably in higher education or education-related issues. Knowledge and familiarity with federal legislative and appropriations processes. 3+ years of relevant experience with, and a keen understanding of the legislative process. Experience in working with policymakers and staff in government relations, U.S. Congress, and/or other grassroots organizations. Strong political, professional and interpersonal skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including an ease in reaching out to policymakers and their staff, and in communicating complex concepts in a clear and effective fashion. Proven ability to meet multiple deadlines and manage multiple projects with a high level of organization. Bilingual-English/Spanish Skills a Plus.
