Overview of Founding Director, Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives

Purdue Northwest is a premier metropolitan university, serving approximately 9,300 undergraduate and graduate students. PNW strives to transform students’ lives through innovative instruction and extensive student support. PNW has one of the most diverse student populations in the state of Indiana and currently serves a student body that is 24% Hispanic. PNW demonstrates a purposeful process of cultivating a student-focused campus community that creates a sense of belonging. With an attentiveness to the development of the entire student journey — from admissions through alumni — this newly created position will be part of a larger university-wide framework that champions the growth and sustainability of diverse students at PNW. Under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management and Students Affairs, the Director of Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives will participate in strategic planning and institutional capacity building necessary to enhance long-term growth as the university progresses toward its goal of achieving status as a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), specifically as a Hispanic-Serving Institution. Work internally across divisions to enhance the learning environment for students of color and externally with community partners to create opportunities that will support HSI initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities of Director, Hispanic Serving Initiatives
  • Contribute to the strategic planning necessary to enhance the long-term growth and sustainability to shift campus culture to better serve the needs of Latino/a/x and underrepresented communities
  • Build institutional capacity for the implementation of internally and externally funded HSI initiatives by working across and among departments and divisions to support and sustain HSI initiatives that align with strategic plans, goals, and priorities. Identify opportunities for improvement to student success
  • Implement campus initiatives enhancing the support of students of color
  • Establishes partnerships with external stakeholders to facilitate the planning and development of future HSI initiatives. Increase the visibility of innovations that result from HSI initiatives; works closely with community leaders and organizations to build regional community partnerships for HSI initiatives within surrounding communities. Campus liaison for Hispanic/Latinx Advisory group
Experience of Director, Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives
  • 5 years of experience in the development and administration of cross-divisional, community, and/or federally funded projects
  • Experience working with Latino/a/x populations, developing and managing project budgets, evaluating project level activities & making recommendations for continuous improvement of student success initiatives and strategic planning

Education of Director, Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Master’s degree in Education, Public Administration or related field preferred
Core Competencies of Director, Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives
  • Ability to conceptualize, plan, and implement major initiatives supported by diverse campus & community stakeholders
  • Lead & facilitate collaborative work across university divisions, departments, academic programs, & diverse communities
  • Prioritize and execute a wide range of projects simultaneously and produce various reports for key university & community constituency groups
  • Knowledge of Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) best practices & funding opportunities (Title V, etc.) for HSIs, barriers that limit participation in higher education for Latino/a/x, underrepresented & underserved students
  • Experience interacting with representatives of federal & state funding agencies
  • Build collaborative partnerships with a broad range of organizations (public agencies, K-12, non-profits, community, business, governmental & national)
