The Vice Provost of Academic Personnel (VPAP) ensures the continued excellence of UW's faculty—and of its entire academic staff—so that UW can fulfill its core missions: the education of a diverse student body to become responsible global citizens, the pursuit of new knowledge, the discovery of timely solutions to the world's most complex problems, and the enrichment of the lives of people throughout our community, state and the world.
The VPAP provides vision, executive leadership and strategic direction to support the excellence of UW's more than 5,200 faculty and academic staff. The position, reporting directly to the Provost and serving as a member of the President's Cabinet and Board of Deans and Chancellors, serves as the primary institutional resource for faculty matters. The VPAP works collaboratively with campus chancellors, vice presidents/provosts, associate/assistant vice presidents/provosts, deans, program directors, department chairs, faculty members, and administrators in support of the UW's mission and strategic priorities. In addition, the VPAP provides central campus leadership, administrative oversight, professional development, and support for shared governance and the life cycle of faculty at UW. The VPAP develops and interprets policy, guided by a collaborative problem-solving orientation.
The VPAP will bring the vision, energy, integrity, personal qualities, and professional profile to inspire a dedicated team and garner the trust, respect, and collaboration of colleagues across the University. The new leader will possess the expertise to lead an academic personnel office and strategy that ensures that policies are reflective of best practices in support of recruiting, developing, supporting, and retaining the best, most diverse and innovative faculty and academic staff from around the world. The VPAP will foster a responsive, forward-looking, and collaborative approach to supporting and enabling the academic units across the university to achieve their goals. The VPAP will prioritize building relationships across the university based on mutual trust that prioritize communication, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. The VPAP will ensure a strong and healthy team culture within the Office of Academic Personnel and ensure that staffing structures align with strategic priorities. The VPAP will bring a deep commitment to attracting, supporting, and serving a diverse faculty, supporting a multicultural university, and creating a respectful environment that embraces all individuals.
The successful candidate will have significant experience with faculty recruitment, retention, on- boarding and development, promotion and tenure, and other faculty policies and processes as well as a track record of enhancing and advancing institutional diversity, equity and inclusion, and a commitment to the highest standards of academic excellence. A terminal degree and a record of academic achievement to qualify for tenure at the level of full professor is required.
