Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Medicine

The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine (GSM) seeks a visionary leader to serve as its next Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Medicine. The Vice Chair is responsible for assisting the Chair in the educational, research, and clinical missions for the Department. The Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Medicine reports to the Chair of the Department of Medicine.

Responsibilities

The Vice Chair of Education is responsible for oversight of the educational mission of the department, including coordination of training residents, fellows, and medical students. The Vice Chair also directs performance improvement and faculty development projects, and departmental CME efforts. Other responsibilities of the Vice Chair include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve in an administrative capacity as Vice Chair of Education and Internal Medicine Residency Program Director in the department
  • Assist the Chair in the development and implementation of the strategic plan for the department and oversee the CME activities of the department
  • Provide oversight and direction for the Internal Medicine categorical and Transitional Year programs and subspecialty fellowship programs
  • Supervise educational programs in the department to be in accordance with ACGME requirements
  • Be responsible for recruitment of residents and monitor their progress in the program to ensure that graduating residents can practice as independent consultants and meet ACGME requirements to pass the ABIM examination
  • Participate in teaching and training of residents, medical students and fellows including clinical teaching in the hospital and clinics as well by participation in didactics including morning report, Grand Rounds and other conferences
  • Devote sufficient time and effort daily to the program to ensure continuity of leadership and to fulfill all responsibilities necessary to meet the educational programs of the department.
  • Comply with JCAHO, NRMP and ACGME regulations relevant to GME
  • Advise the Chair on educational priorities, funding needs, recruitment, and infrastructure support for various programs
  • Assist the Chair in the general administration of the department, especially as a key faculty member in the residency program and as a member of the clinical competence committee
  • Mentor young faculty to improve their scholarly productivity and participate in recruitment of faculty
  • Assist the Program Directors and DIO/Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education in supervising all aspects of the Department’s training programs, including selection and management of the faculty members and other program personnel
  • Champion wellness among all trainees
  • Organize and oversee patient quality initiatives such as: PI/QI projects, Root Cause Analysis, and Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER)
  • Participate in hospital and departmental committees and support the goals and mission of UT Medical Center
  • Assist in faculty development and faculty academic promotion efforts
  • Give lectures at departmental, local, state, national and international conferences
  • Disseminate scientific knowledge through publications and other scholarly activities
  • Maintain board certification in the relevant specialty
  • Work closely with the Director of Diversity at the GSM and demonstrate a tangible commitment to and knowledge of equal employment opportunity, affirmative action, diversity, and inclusion
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by the Chairperson of the Department of Medicine from time to time
  • Maintain a high degree of personal integrity

Preferred Qualifications

The GSM seeks a clinician-educator with strong leadership and organization skills, with previous senior level management experience in an academic healthcare organization. The applicant must have a record of accomplishment at a national or international level in their field of expertise and a strong interest in pursuing research and scholarly activity. Candidates must also commit to diversity and equal opportunity.

This position is a tenured or non-tenure track academic appointment with dedicated time for pursuing academic and scholarly activity. The candidate must be board certified by the American Board or American Osteopathic Board in Internal Medicine or a sub-specialty board and eligible to obtain a license to practice medicine in Tennessee. Academic rank will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and qualifications.

Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine includes 17 divisions and comprises more than 160 faculty members dedicated to the tripartite mission of clinical care, education, and research. In addition to thriving Internal Medicine Residency and Transitional Year programs there are well established fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease, Interventional Cardiology and Pulmonary Disease/Critical Care Medicine and Hematology/Oncology. Plans are underway for expansion into additional areas.

Graduate School of Medicine, Knoxville

The GSM is home to ten academic departments with more than 400 full-time and volunteer teaching physicians, dentists, and researchers. Currently, 224 residents and fellows train in 15 ACGME-accredited specialty and subspecialty programs, and 16 residents train in CODA-accredited general dentistry and AAMOS accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery programs.

Third-year medical students from the UTHSC perform core clerkships with GSM faculty in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, pediatrics, neurology, and psychiatry. Fourth-year electives are offered in a number of specialties and subspecialties and are available to medical students across the country.

The GSM, in partnership with the UTMC, sponsors extensive translational research in both clinical and laboratory settings. The faculty collaborates with various institutions both regionally and nationally including other UTHSC campuses, UTK, ORNL, and other health science center institutions.

University of Tennessee Medical Center

The UTMC is the East Tennessee region’s only academic medical center, magnet recognized hospital, and level I trauma center. Its mission of serving the region through healing, education, and discovery is made possible through the partnership of UHS and the GSM.

For over 60 years, UTMC has been a leader in improving the health and wellness of the region and serves as a referral center for Eastern Tennessee, Southeastern Kentucky, Western North Carolina, and Northern Georgia. Its 625-bed hospital is home to East Tennessee’s only dedicated heart hospital, adult transplant center, and regional perinatal center. The Joint Commission recognizes the UTMC as a comprehensive stroke center, comprehensive cardiac care center, and has given the medical center its advanced certification for total hip and total knee replacement. Close proximity to UTK and ORNL allow faculty to cultivate research efforts and interests with some of the nation’s top scientific innovators.
