Job Description

Reporting the Vice President of Student Life and Chief Diversity Officer (VPSL-CD), the Dean of Students is responsible for the strategic director of their assigned areas. The Dean works to enhance students’ learning and engagement experience at NMT by applying student development theory and learning outcomes that promote students' academic and personal success, thereby increasing student learning, satisfaction, and retention. The Dean plays a key role in the development of university policy and participates in institutional planning, evaluation, and assessment. The Dean will be responsible for developing and implementing a Parent and Family Program for the University, based in best practices.

As a key leadership position on this campus and in the Division of Student Life, the Dean provides initiative that continuing to build a campus community that fosters the total development of the student by inspiring students to develop their leadership skills and character, helping them to refine their intellect, and aiding them in their quest for professional excellence.

Leadership and Strategic Planning

  • Serves as a catalyst for the development of initiatives and programs that are directed toward enhancing student development and the celebration of their successes and achievements.
  • Develop and implement department working procedures, budgets, policies and goal
  • Provide leadership for student conduct, Student Leadership and Engagement, Performing Arts and Programs, and Housing and Residential Life
  • Lead the strategic direction of student leadership and engagement for the campus
  • Participate in the creating and implementing of the campus's emergency evacuation and preparedness plan

Student Conduct and Accountability

  • Serves as Chief Student Conduct Officer
  • Provide student support on issues related to student services, institution policies and department processes
  • Oversee the adjudication process of potential violations of the Student Code of Conduct and the development of systems and procedures in the adjudication process
  • Manage Maxient; recruit, train, and advise the University Judicial Board
  • Organize the Code of Conduct review process;
  • Serves as liaison in response to conduct and/or conflict matters
  • Provide consultations and training for faculty, staff, and students and makes appropriate referrals
  • Oversees the administration of emergency/medical appeals and tuition appeals; work with appropriate offices to streamline processes

Administration

  • Review and develop policies for student clubs and organization
  • Assess student body needs and respond to any questions or concerns from the student body in an effective and timely manner
  • Conduct consistent department evaluations to determine how efficient it is running and, if necessary, recommend ideas of improvement
  • Prepare and present annual statistical reports
  • Serve as a key member of the Student Life Leadership Team

Student Leadership and Engagement

  • Provide oversight of student leadership and engagement opportunities
  • Assist in the organization and planning of large scale campus-wide events and programs
  • Serve as the co-Advisor for the Student Government Association

Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree required - Area of study: Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field. Demonstrated leadership ability and experience leading in a culture of change and innovation, with the capacity to motivate staff and students to accept and embrace change required. Understanding of how to assist all students with their connection to an institution and ability to persist required. Demonstrated intercultural proficiencies with a strong belief in the value of diversity in enriching the learning experience and the quality of life on campus for all members of the university community required. An understanding and appreciation of academic life and how student affairs and academics intersect to provide a holistic experience for both undergraduate and transfer students required. A strong community builder, convener, and collaborator, capable of building bridges to departments, faculty, staff, students, and the community required.
