Serve as the university's primary point of contact with Native American tribes, federal and state agencies, and applicable consultants. Campus manager responsible for Tribal regulatory compliance, consultation and communication, outreach, and records management. The Director will retain campus regulatory compliance authority over all tribal Native American collections under the administrative control of the University.
The Director of Tribal Relations at CSULB will be responsible for maintaining and developing university and tribal relations through an intergovernmental process of consultation, outreach, education, and communication.
CSULB benefits from the oldest American Indian Studies program in the field with 4.5 full-time faculty and robust American Indian student services. CSULB has an active NAGPRA Lab and working actively towards repatriation and deaccession.
CSULB is uniquely situated within the Tongva ancestral and sacred village of Puvungna, and is actively engaged in the stewardship of the land. Puvungna means the “gathering place” in the Tongva language. Puvungna is a sacred site because it is featured in several creation stories and stories of emergence. Today, Tongva/Gabrieleno/Acjachemen and many other Native people visit Puvungna regularly for spiritual sustenance, to hold ceremonies, and to gather and maintain community relations.
In 2022, the university established a restrictive covenant and conservation easement to protect the undeveloped 22-acres on campus, which includes Tribal ceremonial and repatriated, reburial grounds. The University is actively implementing new administrative oversight to protect and maintain the integrity of Puvungna as a critical cultural resource.
Because of our unique location within the traditional territory of a sacred village site, our urban setting, and our proximity to over thirty federal Indian reservations, CSULB prides itself in serving both a diverse urban and reservation-based American Indian community.

Thorough knowledge of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, CalNAGPRA, AB 275, AB 52, NAHC, and SHPO statutory and regulatory requirements as well as the applicable roles, responsibilities, and points of interface with these local, state, and federal agencies. Demonstrated superior written and verbal communication skills in English. Ability to interpret and apply a variety of complex policies, procedures, regulations, and agreements, identify deviations from applicable policies to carry out responsibilities in accordance with university policies and applicable laws. Ability to conceptualize or identify needed changes, develop, and implement practical, innovative and/or creative solutions using independent judgment to unusual and sometimes complex situations. Ability to use tact, diplomacy and discretion when handling sensitive and/or confidential matters or materials. Ability to collect and analyze data / information, draw conclusions from the analysis, effectively present the information and make recommendations. Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external communities while establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with the various partnering agencies and the campus community. Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of subordinates and ability to delegate effectively.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of five (5) years of related professional experience working for a Native American tribe and/or in maintaining constructive relationships with Native American tribes that hold interest in California required. Thorough understanding of the salient issues and opportunities in advancing the University's engagement with Native communities preferred. Supervisory experience preferred.
The hiring range for this position is $7,500 to $8,750 per month, commensurate with experience. Salary placement is determined by the education, qualifications, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
The salary range for this position is $6,907 to $10,361 per month.
