Job Description

The energy systems manager will oversees the day-to-day operations of the campus Energy Management & Building Automation Systems (EMS/BAS), including connectivity to building energy meters, building automation system data points, and Heating/Electric Plant data points. The energy systems manager is responsible for collecting and analyzing data from the EMS to provide recommendations and performing program changes to energy controls/equipment in an effort to lower energy consumption and utility cost without affecting occupant comfort. The energy systems manager also acts as the lead campus technical resource for various energy projects and other projects during design and construction, reviews studies and designs related to decarbonization of the campus, and serves as the university technical resource on capital project teams.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Manage and operate the Energy Management Systems, troubleshoot EMS operating issues, including connectivity with Network Services, and other vendor(s) systems
  2. Monitor energy consumption, determine systems scheduling for optimal efficiency and cost
  3. Provide 24 hour emergency response for EMS/BAS systems
  4. Perform data mining and detailed energy analysis to identify opportunities for energy conservation
  5. Generate reports on energy use trends, budget, climate action and energy reporting
  6. Manage campus solar arrays to ensure proper energy production and revenue potential. Establish and manage maintenance contract and utility & SREC records
  7. Work closely with others oversee maintenance operations regarding energy conservation and efficient system operations. Manages demand response operations
  8. Generate, update, and maintain preventive maintenance programs
  9. Schedule and program all non-automated events, holidays or special requests in the EMS/BAS
  10. Interact with the technical staff on too hot/cold calls from building occupants, investigating nature of the problem and proposing solutions
  11. Assist in establishing department standards on controls and HVAC
  12. Supervise and coordinate activities of consultants and vendors
  13. Oversee and coordinate with engineers on HVAC designs

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering
  2. 3-5 years' experience in energy management. Certified Energy Manager designation or other technical training will be considered in lieu of up to 2 years of experience
  3. Extensive Knowledge of Energy Management Systems and Building Automation Systems; Experience with TacVista EMS, METASYS energy management systems
  4. Knowledgeable in alternative energy practices, energy conservation, solar systems, geothermal systems, demand response and decarbonization technologies

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrated ability to analyze problems, identifies solutions, make and implement effective solutions
  2. Demonstrated ability to oversee a variety of programs and assignments simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities and requirements
  3. Must possess strong oral and written communication skills
  4. Ability to interact with various agencies/individuals (i.e. employees, other departments, outside agencies and vendors) to coordinate activities and resolve problems
  5. Ability to interpret blueprints and electrical/mechanical
  6. Ability to coordinate with energy project teams as the lead campus technical resource

Potential for Permanent Hybrid/Remote Work:
The facilities department is part of a project to move some administrative functions to a permanent remote/hybrid work model, including this position. The permanent remote/hybrid work model project is currently in Phase One. During this phase detailed plans and policies will be developed, including the identification and provision of shared, reservable space for the occasional on-campus work that members of department, including this position, may need to do.
