Position for Urban Design, Assistant or Associate Professor

The College of Architecture (CoA) at Texas Tech University invites candidates to apply for a fulltime tenure-track/tenured position in Urban Design at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The position is located in Lubbock, TX and has a nine-month duty period, from approximately September 1 to May 31 each year.

Texas Tech University (https://www.ttu.edu/) is a public research university, with an enrollment that has surpassed 40,000 students. The CoA (https://www.depts.ttu.edu/architecture/) currently enrolls over 800 architecture students and has a reputation for producing technically trained, high performing architects, who understand the culture of design. In 2019, the CoA was #10 on Design Intelligence’s Most Hired From list. Our mission is to advance the knowledge, discipline, and practice of architecture through innovation, creative teaching, research, regional and global engagement, and scholarship. In support for this, the Lubbock campus offers four degrees: B.S. in Architecture, M.Arch, M.S. and Ph.D. The CoA also has a campus in El Paso, Texas, making the CoA the only college of architecture with a permanent program on the US/Mexico border. The El Paso campus offers a B.S. in Architecture, border issues forming a fundamental aspect of that program. The CoA is also globally engaged with a semester abroad program in Seville, Spain as well as study abroad programs and studios located in various international cities.

The Opportunity:

The College of Architecture at Texas Tech University seeks esteemed applicants for the position of tenure-track/tenured Assistant/Associate Professor of Urban Design The successful candidate will take the new position within the CoA to promote and expand the relationships between advanced technology and expanded urban thinking in architecture and urban design.

Collaboration with the Landscape Architecture Department and other related disciplines and entities are expected. The College values innovative teaching methodology and expects the position to be a collaborative and innovative faculty member helping to advance the College’s pedagogy in architecture, urbanism, and/or landscape urbanism. As a faculty member, the successful candidate will teach urban design related course work at the graduate and undergraduate level.

At the CoA, all tenured/tenure track faculty engage in teaching, research and creative activity, and service. As a college located in a R1 university, candidates are expected to establish and maintain a strong research agenda, while also teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, which may include lectures, design studios, and seminars in their area of expertise. CoA faculty are expected to contribute directly to the enhancement and expansion of Texas Tech University's research and creative scholarship, to advance their disciplines and the state of the art. Selected candidates will be joining CoA and Texas Tech University during a growth phase and a period of major opportunities for our faculty. Anticipated Start Date: September 1, 2023

Applications will be accepted, and review will continue, until the position is filled. Shortlisted candidates are expected to be invited for on-campus interviews in March/April 2023.

Required Qualifications:

• Professional degree in architecture
• Demonstrated teaching experience in Urban Design studio
• Demonstrated teaching experience in lecture/seminar in Urban Design
• Demonstrated experience in research and/or creative scholarship
• Demonstrated experience, or strong promise for working with underrepresented groups; or record of or strong promise towards work related to the issues of social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion; or demonstrated work trajectory informed by experiences in multiple cultural environments

Preferred Qualifications:

• Post-Professional degree in Architecture or a related field
• PhD in the area of expertise
• Foreign language ability
• Demonstrated experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, community engagement, and/or institutional engagement
• Demonstrated experience in funded research, esp. Urban Design
• Evidence of research in Urban Design
