Chair of Instruction

The College of Architecture (CoA) at Texas Tech University (TTU) seeks experienced candidates for the position of Chair of Instruction to join the College faculty and to participate in advancing innovative design, teaching, and research and creative activity. The College values teaching excellence and expects the Chair to be a collaborative member of the administrative team, responsible for advancing the College’s pedagogy and academic reputation.

The university and the college:

Texas Tech University (https://www.ttu.edu/) is a public research university, with an enrollment that has surpassed 40,000 students. Its main campus is located in Lubbock, Texas, which is in the high plains of the West Texas and Llano Estacado regions (https://www.depts.ttu.edu/hr/workattexastech/LivingInLubbock.php). Since 25% of its undergraduate population identify as Hispanic, Texas Tech University is a designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). The CoA (https://www.depts.ttu.edu/architecture/) currently enrolls over 800 architecture students and has a reputation for producing technically educated, high-performing architects. Our mission is to advance the knowledge, discipline, and practice of architecture through innovation, creative teaching, research, regional and global engagement, and scholarship. In support of this, the Lubbock campus offers four degrees: B.S. in Architecture, M. Arch, M.S., and Ph.D. The CoA also has a campus in El Paso, Texas, making the CoA the only college of architecture with a permanent program on the US/Mexico border. The El Paso campus offers a B.S. in Architecture, border issues form a fundamental aspect of that program. The CoA is also globally engaged with a semester abroad program in Seville, Spain, as well as study abroad programs and studios in various international cities.

The CoA celebrates the diverse perspectives and backgrounds of our faculty, staff, and students. The position:

The Chair will be responsible for the B.S. in Architecture and M. Arch. programs. Administrative duties include but are not limited to:

  • Anticipating and planning course schedules.
  • Collecting teaching preferences from faculty and appointing teaching assignments.
  • Identifying any need for and assigning adjunct faculty and instructors.
  • Evaluating the teaching effectiveness of faculty for annual faculty reviews.
  • Approving faculty leave.
  • Overseeing curriculum and program development.
  • Coordinating studio levels; facilitating year level design coordinator meetings
  • Working with Associate Dean of Academic Affairs to establish and implement a curricular matrix and clarify new NAAB criteria for faculty.
  • Working with Associate Dean of Academic Affairs on organizational strategy for upcoming accreditation.
  • Working with Facilities Director and Unit Manager for Advising to determine classroom assignments.
  • Leading departmental or college meetings.
  • Participating in university-level chairperson meetings.
  • Monitoring course enrollment with Unit Manager for Advising and adjusting course schedule when appropriate.
  • Maintaining a consistent presence in the CoA and being accessible as needed
  • Working with Executive Director to determine Student Assistant, Graduate Assistant, and Teaching Assistant positions.
  • Facilitating pedagogical justifications for course fees.
  • Monitoring semester and summer study aboard enrollment.

The Chair of Instruction is expected to guide the College’s academic affairs, promote pedagogical excellence, and help advance the College’s goals and objectives. In fulfilling these responsibilities, the Chair will work closely with the College’s faculty and staff, the Associate Dean for Academics, the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation, and the Dean.

The Chair of Instruction will also teach one 3-hour course each semester. Candidates should possess a record of distinction in architectural education and a record of scholarship with the proven capacity for sponsored research. Service duties include program-building, as well as commitment to extra-curricular activities. Service to the department, college, and university is expected.

Required Qualifications:

  • A professional degree in architecture
  • Proven administrative experience
  • Earned tenure position at a college or university
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching architectural design studio as well as courses in the candidate’s areas of study
  • Demonstrated experience, or strong promise for working with underrepresented groups; or record and/or strong promise towards work related to the issues of social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion; or demonstrated work trajectory informed by experiences in multiple cultural environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Post-professional degree in architecture or related field, or PhD
  • Demonstrated experience in coordination of design studio
  • Professional service appropriate to the discipline
