About the Master of Science Degree in Athletic Training (MSAT) and the Department:
The extensive curriculum of the Master of Science Degree in Athletic Training (MSAT) prepares students to be equitable and inclusive health care providers who will provide high quality care in multiple employment settings. The MSAT at CSUN is scheduled to accept it’s first cohort, summer 2022. The program is a 2-year, 6-semester, 64-unit degree program. We have a diversity of clinical sites throughout Los Angeles and Ventura counties that include 4-year institutions, community colleges, high schools, rehabilitation clinics and hospitals. The diversity of students enrolled in the MSAT mirror CSUN’s demographics, with most students being first generation college and from a diversity of races/ethnicities.
The department of Kinesiology at CSUN is at the forefront in the study of human movement. We offer a comprehensive education toward the Bachelor and Master of Science degrees with the newest and most comprehensive facilities in the CSU system.
The department is a community that educates and inspires its students to understand and appreciate human movement for personal expression and wellness throughout the lifespan. In doing so, students and faculty work together to improve the quality of life for them and their community; the department values and respects the spectrum of human diversity. An integrated approach to the teaching, learning, and application of human movement provides opportunities and experiences to achieve the department's student learning outcomes.
The diversity of courses within our core curriculum prepares the student for study leading to expertise in one of five areas of focus for academic options. These options are Applied Fitness, Dance, Exercise Science, Physical Education, and Sports Studies. The Department of Kinesiology also offers two Master’s of Science Degrees: 1) Kinesiology with areas of study in Adapted Physical Activity, Biomechanics, Dance, Exercise Physiology, Motor Behavior, Pedagogy in Physical Education, and Sport Studies; and 2) Master of Science Degree in Athletic Training.

Applicants must possess a doctorate/terminal degree Athletic Training or related field. ABD candidates will be considered, but must complete the degree before the time of appointment. Applicants must demonstrate: 1) the ability and commitment to working, educating and mentoring a diverse student population; 2) the potential to teach, conduct research, engage in scholarly and creative activities; and 3) provide leadership as the Clinical Education Coordinator of the Master of Science Degree in Athletic Training. Preferred qualifications include: 1) evidence of successful teaching experience at the college or university level in athletic training/health care; 2) experience with instructional and educational technology, and innovative teaching techniques; 4) experience with educating and mentoring athletic training students; and 5) a working knowledge of accreditation processes.
CSUN is a Learning Centered University. The successful candidate will be expected to join the faculty and staff in a commitment to active learning, to the assessment of learning outcomes, and to multiple pathways that enable students to graduate.
At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to work in the United States.
Primary administrative responsibilities include serving as the Clinical Education Coordinator of the MSAT. Primary teaching responsibilities include graduate athletic training content in the professional program. Secondary teaching responsibilities include Kinesiology course work that matches the candidate’s experience and abilities. The typical teaching workload is 12 units per semester. The candidate will receive 3 units of workload each semester for administrative duties. Faculty have additional responsibilities such as: 1) student advisement; 2) supervision of graduate research projects/theses; 3) maintaining an active program of scholarly research and publication; and 4) service on department, college, and university committees as appropriate. The successful candidate must conduct publishable research and attempt to secure external funding to support research and scholarly activities. The successful candidate may be required to teach on weekdays, evenings, weekends and on-line. The successful candidate will work closely with Athletic Training and Kinesiology faculty in the department.
The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the college of Health and Human Development and the Department of Kinesiology for recommending tenure and promotion.
