Job Summary

The Adjunct Assistant Professor for the Nurse Practitioner Program will be responsible for creating a dynamic, learner-centered environment that supports the diverse learning needs of the student population based on educational theory and evidence-based teaching practices. Assume other duties as required to contribute to the overall success of the NP program. Maintain teaching load as assigned.

Essential Duties

  • Teach NP nursing courses each semester as needed.
  • Support and contribute to the CDU’s strategic mission, vision, and goals.
  • Assist with the direction of student activities ordinarily associated with an instructional program at the Adjunct Associate Professor will be responsible for creating a dynamic, learner-centered environment that supports the diverse learning needs of the student population based on educational theory and evidence-based teaching practices University level.
  • Supports the School of Nursing to promote, develop and maintain positive relationships with clinical and health care delivery agencies and programs for educational experiences and preceptors.
  • Promote, develop and maintain positive relationships within the school of nursing and all CDU departments on campus.
  • Be familiar with course content.
  • Distribute course syllabi.
  • Prepares and conducts effective onsite and or online learning activities congruent with the course objectives.
  • Plans learning experiences that are appropriate for practice doctoral pedagogy.
  • Organizes and maintains Blackboard as related to the assigned course.
  • Participate in the coordination and oversight of didactic or clinical experiences for assigned students.
  • Evaluate students per program policy.
  • Prepares and reviews student projects and evaluates learner performance in the classroom.
  • Maintain faculty responsibilities and accountability for apprising students of their progress in coursework or project completion and for those who are not meeting expectations, establishes a mutual learning plan to achieve stated goals.
  • Refers students to appropriate learning and support resources.
  • Notifies the NP director of at-risk students as soon as identified and at least weekly thereafter.
  • Completes final evaluation of student performance and submits student grades on time.
  • Responds to student electronic and other communications within 48 hours.
  • Provides learning support for students to include meeting with the student as requested outside of class.
  • Submits attendance as required by the university.
  • Participates in program and course faculty meetings as needed.
  • Meets with program faculty to review the course and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Develop curriculum enhancements in support of health services, population health management, health policy and value-based care education.
  • Attend professional community meetings.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Engage in student mentorship activities.
  • May participate in Chair Committee, may serve as Chair or as of 2nd Chair on Chair Committee
  • Participate in the development of required documents such as college, self-studies, and BRN/CCNE/WSCUC reports as necessary.
  • Completes the required orientation for adjunct faculty.
  • Participate in department activities associated with the instructional program as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Nurse Practitioners must hold National certification as a nurse practitioner.
  • MSN required. DNP, EdD in Health Care Adm. PhD In Nursing is preferable but not required
  • Current, unencumbered California license as an RN and Certified NP.


  • Experience in clinical advance practice nursing practice, with a minimum of 2 yrs. experience.
  • Ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Evidence of an emerging national reputation.
  • Experience in a shared governance environment.
  • Experience with or an interest in mentoring students
  • Track record of research funding.
  • Scientific publications and presentations
  • Evidence of community outreach/engagement.

Minimum Requirements

  • Knowledge of nursing educational NP program and curriculum development.
  • Knowledge of the principals and practices of advance nursing practice, including nursing guidelines set forth by the Board of Registered Nursing, ACCN and NP Essentials.
  • Knowledge of teaching and clinical practice in the NP role of nursing.
  • Knowledge of current developments, trends, and complexities within nursing and the healthcare industry.
  • Knowledge of health-related education in a global economy.
  • Ability to recruit for and market an educational program.
  • Demonstrated commitment to service in underserved communities.
  • Demonstrated leadership in teaching, research, and public service.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to perform and a commitment to extra-curricular responsibilities on behalf of the department, school, and University.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

DNP, EdD in Health Care Adm. PhD In Nursing is preferable but not required

  • CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS: In addition to California Code of Regulations (CCR) Section 1425, all faculty must meet CCR section 1424(h), which states nursing faculty members whose teaching responsibilities include subject matter directly related to the practice of nursing shall be clinically competent in the area to which they are assigned and Section 1420(d), which defines clinically competent to mean that a nursing program faculty member possesses and exercises the degree of learning, skill, care and experience ordinarily possessed and exercised by staff level registered nurses of the clinical unit to which the faculty member is assigned.
