Job Summary

Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) is a premier mission-driven university dedicated to transforming the lives of underserved and under-resourced communities through health professions education, biomedical and public health research, and compassionate care. Through a collaborative venture with the Urban Health Institute, CDU is recruiting for a faculty investigator position to enhance our CDU Advantage Health Policy program area.

The CDU Advantage is a promise of specialized education that creates medical and health leaders who are able to conduct and translate empirical works in the quest for social justice and health equity globally and who in partnership with the community serve as agents, activists, and advocates for policy reform and catalysts for societal transformation, especially for the underserved populations.

We are seeking forward thinking investigators with health services research, population health, organization/management theory, health policy analysis, or healthcare disparities research expertise. Priority content areas for this position include issues related to racial, ethnic, and social determinant driven disparities in care and health outcomes. Prior work can include research and expertise in both domestic and international settings.

All candidates should demonstrate an interest and skill in teaching in their field, a commitment to health equity, translational research, and multi- and interdisciplinary research collaboration. Clinician investigators are welcome and if needed, we will coordinate candidates’ evaluation with clinical department chairs in their respective College and department.

Essential Duties

  1. Design, implement and direct research in any of the following areas:

  • Health Services Research
  • Health Policy Analysis
  • Population Health
  • Patient-centered outcomes

  1. Meet CDU faculty expectations and participate in faculty activities including:
  • Contribution to field of research through publications and other scholarly activities
  • Participation in College of Science and Health, School of Nursing and/or College of Medicine programs and committees, as well as other University committees as assigned
  • Conduct formal teaching as assigned to meet department/college instructional needs
  • Provide mentorship to students, trainees, or junior faculty as well as opportunities for them to participate in faculty members research

  1. Support University-wide clinical education and health system partnerships. This can include:
  • Partnerships with clinical and health care delivery programs’ educational experiences and serving as preceptors and providers
  • Provide content expertise for clinical partner quality improvement efforts
  • Develop curriculum enhancements in support of health services, population health management, health policy and value-based care education

  1. Participate in activities and partnerships in the surrounding community and greater Los Angeles consistent with CDU values of community engagement, social justice, and health equity by:
  • Contributing to the development and testing of models for achieving access to equitable healthcare services for vulnerable populations
  • Supporting the development of conditions and policies that promote health, prevent adverse events, and improve outcomes in under-resourced settings.
  • Producing strategies and tracking progress in improving health equity across the community and region.
  • Identifying socio-economic and cultural factors that determine the health of populations and aid in developing policies that address the impact of these determinants

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with student and faculty recruitment
  • Participate in and support shared governance
  • Perform relevant Department specific duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Candidates with a Ph.D., Dr.PH, M.D., or DNP with academic training and experience in a health policy relevant field (e.g., public health, health services, health policy, health administration, management, population health, and health outcomes etc.) are encouraged to apply.

Doctoral-prepared applicants may be expected to show evidence of scholarly achievement, including publications and professional presentations, a proven track record in peer-reviewed and externally funded research, and prior academic work.

RANK and TRACK

  • Faculty rank will be determined based on experience and review of dossier material submitted.

Minimum Requirements

  • Track record of independent research funding or for junior faculty research agenda aimed at securing independent funding
  • Demonstrated academic productivity through scientific publications and presentations.
  • Ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Evidence of community engagement and service.
  • Evidence of an emerging and proven national reputation in field of expertise.
  • Experience in teaching and mentoring students, trainees, and/or post-doctoral fellows.
