Overview:
Salem State University is seeking a full-time, tenure track faculty member specializing in School Counseling for appointment to the Secondary and Higher Education Department. The School Counseling Program prepares candidates to become professional school counselors who can develop and deliver comprehensive school counseling plans that respond to the needs of all students. Our program teaches students to contextualize their counseling competencies by developing skills in leadership, advocacy, and collaboration. We also offer a license in School Adjustment Counseling and a licensure-only program for students with an MS in Psychology.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the MSCA contract. Duties include teaching, advising, scholarship and contributions to continuously improve the department and university. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester (six graduate-level courses per year). The position is subject to available funding.

  • Teaching Expectations: Teaching assignments may include (but are not limited to) courses in multicultural counseling, psychology of learning, career development, psychological testing, and seminar courses for practicum students.
  • Research Expectations: Faculty are expected to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present research at peer-reviewed conferences.
  • Administrative and Mentoring Expectations: Faculty will be expected to supervise practicum students as part of their teaching load and assist with program coordination in exchange for a reduced teaching load.


Required Qualifications:

An earned Ph.D. in Counselor Education from a CACREP-accredited program or PhD in Counseling Psychology from an APA accredited program or evidence of substantial progress towards degree completion by August 1, 2023; possession of or eligibility for licensure/certification as a school counselor; and prior experience as a school counselor or supervising school counselors.


Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated success and research interest working with English language learners, students of color, and/or Indigenous students or training pre-service school counselors to effectively meet the needs of these students; demonstrated success and research interest in working with students with disabilities; and experience teaching in multiple modalities (in-person, hybrid, and online); experience with teaching and/or clinical supervision in higher education; and experience working with students in mentoring, training, or research activities.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with education and experience.
