Assistant Professor of English

Ball State University

The Ball State University Department of English has a full-time tenure track position available starting in the fall 2023 academic year.

The Assistant Professor of English will develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in African American literature and African American Studies; publish peer-reviewed research in area(s) of specialization; and contribute to the major, minor, and graduate degrees in English and to the minor in African American Studies.

The Department of English offers majors and minors in literature, creative writing, professional writing, linguistics, and English Education. African American Studies is a growing program that currently offers a minor exploring both contemporary and historical issues. Students in both programs work with creative, dedicated faculty to explore a variety of texts and contexts, with an eye to becoming better writers, more innovative thinkers, and more thoughtful citizens.

Position Function:

  • Teaching and developing undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate’s area(s) of specialization.
  • Teaching a wide range of courses in English and African American Studies as appropriate to the candidate’s expertise.
  • Ongoing scholarly publication; service as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of PhD in English or related discipline by time of appointment, with specialization in African American literature.
  • Record of effective teaching in African American Studies or related fields.
  • Record of publications and/or presentations in African American Literature.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated research expertise in African American Studies or related fields.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following: Indigenous Literatures, Hemispheric Studies, Transatlantic Studies, Digital Humanities.
