The California State University Office of the Chancellor (CSU) in Long Beach, California – the administrative body of the largest comprehensive university system in the country – invites nominations and applications for the position of system-wide Associate Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs, Equity and Belonging (AVC).

The 23-campus California State University has one of the most diverse student bodies in the United States. Each CSU campus has its own distinct identity, yet all share the same mission: to give students access to possibility that leads to personal and societal transformation and creates lasting impact for California. The CSU draws its students from the top third of the state’s high school graduates and educates one of the most ethnically, economically, and academically diverse student bodies in the nation. The CSU provides more than half of all undergraduate degrees granted to California’s Hispanic, African American, and Native American students combined and nearly one-third of CSU students are the first in their families to attend college.

The AVC provides vision, thought leadership, strategies and solutions regarding student affairs and student diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives throughout the CSU system. Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, the AVC will provide expert advice to the CSU Chancellor and the Board of Trustees, creating the conditions to support campus-based Vice Presidents for Student Affairs and Senior Diversity Officers as they advance a culture of forward-thinking, equitable student engagement. This role will oversee seven direct reports.

The incumbent will be a highly effective internal and external ambassador for the CSU’s commitments to access, affordability, equity and student success. It is a priority that the AVC consult with and support campus leaders as they increase access, close the equity gap and provide appropriate student programs that support the ability of students to succeed in and outside of the classroom, all of which contribute to student success and degree completion. In addition, the next AVC will be responsible for ensuring compliance with system-wide student affairs policy as well as relevant state and federal law, and will represent the CSU with the California Legislature and other educational leadership bodies. An advanced degree and a record of progressively responsible leadership in higher education are required.
