The Department of Educational Studies at Ball State University invites applications for Department Chair at the rank of associate or full professor. Our department is seeking an organized, collegial, student-centered, and advocacy-oriented individual to lead an outstanding team of faculty who focus on both undergraduate and graduate teacher education and adult and community education. They will also promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and excellence in this leadership role.
This person needs to collaborate actively within the college and across the university in order to facilitate undergraduate and graduate teacher education.
This nationally-ranked, multi-disciplinary, and culturally diverse department has 18 full-time faculty members serving graduate and undergraduate students through certificate programs, licensure, and degrees at the Masters and Doctoral level. Programs are face-to-face, hybrid, and online in our college (Teachers College).
Preference will be given to candidates who represent content expertise in at least one of these areas: adult and community education, curriculum and instruction, educational technology, multicultural education, qualitative research, secondary education, and social and cultural foundations.

Through immersive learning projects, our students work directly with the community to foster change and put theory into practice. The department offers PhD, EdD, master’s, and undergraduate degrees, as well as specialized certificates, to meet the needs of students at all levels of their academic career. Many of our programs can be completed online, or as a hybrid of both online and main campus courses.

Position Function: This position offers an opportunity for providing dynamic leadership, encouraging creativity and innovation, and supporting colleagues in furthering the work of the Department. The chairperson plans, directs, and coordinates the academic, operational, personnel, budgetary, and student activities of the department; provides leadership and direction in the development and implementation of academic programs, and in the maintenance of excellence in teaching, scholarly productivity or creative endeavor, and service.
For this twelve-month, full-time tenure-track position, the faculty member is expected to possess expertise within one of the department program areas and be able to teach undergraduate courses in a teacher education preparation program and/or graduate courses in support of the department’s masters and/or doctoral programs and a variety of graduate certificates.
Minimum Qualifications: A doctorate in one of the disciplines within the department of Educational Studies including: adult and community education, curriculum and instruction, educational technology, multicultural education, qualitative research, secondary education, and social and cultural foundations.
Minimum Experience: Record of teaching excellence, research, and service commensurate with the rank of associate, or full professor; successful record of university teaching online and face-to-face; demonstrated success in teaching and advising graduate students; demonstrated commitment to social justice; impactful research agenda documented by recent scholarly publications; a continued commitment to engage in scholarly research publications and presentations; proven leadership ability; proven ability to work with diverse groups.
Preferred Qualifications: Record of grant writing and directing; service as department chair or equivalent leadership role; proficiency with budgets, resource management, and new technologies; knowledge of teacher preparation; skill at hiring, supervising, and evaluating staff; current or previous licensure in teaching; aptitude to learn integrated technology applications; understanding of current issues within the areas represented by Educational Studies programs.
