Usual duties:

The Special Education program is dedicated to the goal of excellence in Special Education research, and professional development. The Garrett Endowed Chair is a tenure-track faculty position in the Special Education program within the School of Teaching and Learning. The candidate will teach graduate courses in special education, conduct research leading to scholarly publications, and promote the research and/or work of the Eleanor and Charles Garrett Center on Transition and Disability Studies (Garrett Center) by presenting at state and national conferences. Another primary role of the Garrett Endowed Chair is to serve as the Executive Director of the Garrett Center, which functions as a training and technical assistance center for educators, students with disabilities, and families. The Garrett Center serves several functions including training and technical assistance, research, leadership for the state transition network, summer camps for youth with disabilities, expanded support services for SHSU students with disabilities, and post-secondary programs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Degree Requirements:

The successful candidate will possess a Doctoral degree in Special Education or related field.

Experience Requirements:

The successful candidate will possess a record of scholarly achievement that merits appointment as an associate or full professor.

The preferred candidate has an understanding of disability studies as its own field and will help develop this arm of the center.

The successful candidate will have experience working with Transition Services.

The successful candidate will possess leadership experience at the district, regional or state level.

The Garrett Endowed Chair carries the traditional responsibilities assigned to faculty members in addition to collaboration activities with the other College of Education Centers, specifically for International Education and the Center for Assessment, Research and Educational Safety (CARES). As an administrator over the Garrett Center, the Garrett Endowed Chair is responsible for coordination and planning of center activities, leadership of the faculty and staff conducting center activities such as writing and managing grants, grant budgets, research collaborating with state agencies such as the Texas Education Agency, the Texas Workforce Commission, and the state advocacy community. Additional collaboration activities include collaboration with regional education service centers and school districts to advance the research-based and evidence-based practices that promote both academic and improved post-school outcomes for students with disabilities. Within the University, the Endowed Chair collaborates with support organizations such as the Academic Student Success Center, TRIO, the Career Center, SHSU Online and the office of Services for Students with Disabilities. Another role is the collaboration with the University faculty engaging in projects that support individuals with disabilities, such as the Center for Innovation and Technology, and the Department of Biological Sciences.
