Usual duties:
The Department of Mass Communication at Sam Houston State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Emerging Media Production. This tenure-track position will begin in the Fall of 2023.
The ideal candidate is an innovative storyteller specializing in producing interactive media and emerging media forms, including virtual and augmented reality experiences. In addition to undergraduate teaching assignments, this position is expected to teach online courses in the newly developed and fully online MA in Emerging and Social Media program.
The candidate must have the desire and ability to:
- Take on significant mentorship roles, including graduate thesis project advising and independent study project advising.
- Share in building a creative community through mentoring, organizing showcases, advising official student media channels, advising student organizations, and advancing departmental initiatives.
- Participate in curriculum development at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Engage with the department, college, and greater campus community through significant service and leadership roles.
- Create and deliver courses through a variety of modalities, including online instruction.
- Engage in creative activity and research as demonstrated by peer-reviewed activities, exhibitions, or screenings of works.
The Department of Mass Communication at Sam Houston State University serves more than 500 students studying journalism, broadcast production, public relations, advertising, and film. Located in the Dan Rather Communications Building, it is home to 90.5 The Kat, Channel 7, Bearkat Student Media, The Houstonian, and the annual Heatwave Media and Film Festival. Degree Requirements:
MFA in Media Production or a related field or a Ph.D. in a related field is required.
ABD candidates may be considered, but the degree must be completed before the official appointment date.
Experience Requirements:
Desirable qualifications include:
- Evidence of creative activity in immersive and interactive storytelling or other emerging media
- Demonstrated expertise with tools for authoring media in XR environments
- Experience or clear potential to foster both experimental and commercial applications of XR production
- Experience in computer programming (C#, Javascript, etc.)
- Experience in film/video image capture/manipulation
- Experience in digital media workflows
- Experience in teaching courses in the following areas: Social Media, Emerging Media, Interactive Media, Virtual Reality Production, Augmented Reality Production
- A record of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level
- A record of excellence in online pedagogy
