Educational Requirements for the Position
Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Two years professional experience working with military organizations, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Department of Defense, Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), student services or experience in a related field. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.
Nature & Purpose of Position
Performs moderately complex administrative and supervisory program work. Provides professional knowledge and expertise in processing GI Bill® Certifications and Hazlewood exemptions for military-affiliated students.
Primary Responsibilities
Oversees the work of assigned program staff. Prepares and reviews reports on the effectiveness of program activities. Confers with staff on program issues and problems and recommends solutions. Plans, implements, coordinates, monitors, and evaluates programs. Recommends program guidelines, procedures, polices, rules, and regulations. Develops and assesses programs. Interprets policies, rules, and regulations and ensures they are followed. Certifies students’ educational claims under various federal and state programs. Ensures compliance with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) for VA and Hazlewood students. Works in conjunction with the Department of Defense, VA, and TVC on educational claims and services. Communicates with students regarding the use of their VA and Hazlewood educational benefits, initiates certification of enrollment, and informs them of program requirements, rules, policies, and procedures for certification. Serves as one of the primary liaisons with other university administrators, student veterans, and other certifying officials regarding GI Bill® certifications and the determination of Hazlewood exemptions. Uses discretion and independent judgment to advise student veterans concerning their certifications for educational benefits and exemptions. Uses independent judgment in performing complex required procedures to qualify student veterans requesting certification and reviews for Hazlewood exemptions. Works with academic advisors to verify course selections are consistent with degree plans. Works with Student Account Services and Student Financial Services to verify payment of benefits through the reconciliation process. Collaborates with campus partners both within and external to Enrollment Success for services and programs. Interacts with VA Education administrators and Texas Veterans Commission officials on behalf of students making requests for educational benefits and exemptions of tuition and fees. Participates in the review and revising of certification process and procedures. Images and indexes documents in support of GI Bill® and Hazlewood exemptions and requests additional documentation when required. May supervise work-study students which includes participating in the hiring of work-study students and determining work priorities. Requires regular contact with students, parents, faculty, and staff. Assists in gathering information and providing reports to appropriate levels of administration. Attends state and regional meetings, and conferences as needed. May be required to attend events outside of normal working hours. Assists the VRC team in planning and implementation of VRC events (Veteran Stole Ceremony, VetWeek, Veteran Tours, Saturday@Sam, and Bearkat Orientation). Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications
Up to 20% of this position, over the fiscal year during off-peak periods, may be performed remotely as determined by the supervisor.
