Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director of Housing Facilities and direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Housing Facilities, the Electrician performs all campus-wide and off-campus projects such as service, test, repair, install, and maintain various electrical systems and equipment to achieve maximum performance and efficiency of operations on a daily basis. Due to an increase in service orders, an additional electrician is needed to support demand.

Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.
Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect and troubleshoot equipment and electrical systems for malfunction, signs of deterioration, or need for adjustment by replacing burnt-out elements and fuses, bypassing or replacing defective wiring, switches or contact point, and cleaning or rewiring motors, and conduct safety tests.
  • Work from blueprints, drawings, or oral instructions from supervisor and/or FSR's in the redesign, modification, and installation of expanded electrical systems in order to meet requirements of construction and alteration projects.
  • Respond to all Housing & Residential Life and campus related on-call duties, emergencies, student related activities within the department, and student check-in and check-out activities.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Working knowledge of current industry accepted methods and procedures for testing, repairing, installing, and maintaining a variety of complicated electrical equipment and systems. Working knowledge of materials, equipment, and tools of the Electrician's trade; working knowledge of various power distribution, auxiliary equipment, and motor control systems; and the ability to use power tools, hand tools, and electronic testing equipment in a safe manner. Skill in working with both digital and analog electrical devices/systems (e.g. microprocessors, programmable controllers, and logic control devices). Working knowledge of NEC and CEC. Working knowledge of all types of electrical fittings and conduit bending, and the ability to run all kinds of conduit.

Ability to install a complete electrical system. Working knowledge of basic electrical theory including AC/DC systems applications and protective relaying. Ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical systems and equipment for malfunctions, signs of damage, deterioration, or adjustment. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and maintain a positive and respectful attitude with peers, subordinates, supervisors, administrators, customers, visitors, and outside agencies. Oral communication skills to obtain and convey accurate, grammatically correct information. Ability to prioritize assignments and complete projects in a timely manner. Ability to use personal computer and standard office software such as Word, Excel, etc. and the ability to program panels with manufacturer's supplied software, preferred. Ability to read and interpret schematic drawings. Skill in modifying or adapting building systems for efficient and economical operation. Basic writing skills sufficient to complete forms and job status reports that are accurate and easy to comprehend. Skill in reading technical instructions related to the trade in order to comprehend written work instructions, equipment operating instructions, and/or other documents related to the job functions. Working knowledge of basic algebra concepts and principles sufficient to understand and apply basic trade formulas. Working knowledge of standard safe work practices. Maintain a safe work environment and be safety conscious while performing all tasks.

Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments. Ability to consistently report to work on time prepared to perform the duties of the position. Must have general knowledge of the theory and operation of major types of steam and gas boilers, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, automated controls, and of the materials, equipment, and techniques used in their maintenance and repair. Must have a full understanding of fire safety related equipment. Must possess the knowledge of electrical safety lockout procedures.

Education and Experience
  • Equivalent to a high school diploma and journey-level electrician skills similar to that acquired through the completion of an electrician's apprenticeship program required.
  • Satisfactory completion of a certified 4-year apprenticeship program or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a university setting, student affairs, or housing preferred.
Licenses / Certificates
  • Possession of California General Electrician Certificate.
  • Must possess California Driver's License, Class C.

The salary range for this classification is $6,151 to $7,942 per month.
