Job Summary
The Academic Advisor, under the general supervision of the Associate Director of the College of Liberal Arts Advising Center (ATLAS) advises undergraduate students regarding university academic requirements, policies, and procedures. The Academic Advisor provides critical support for programs and initiatives designed to strengthen the academic success and retention of undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts.
Key Responsibilities

  • Independently advises prospective and current College of Liberal Arts (CLA) students about academic requirements.
  • Assists senior-level staff members with existing advisement and retention programs, e-advising projects, and college-advising service delivery.
  • Serves as a referral source for college and student group advising units, the Learning Assistance Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Career Development Center, and other academic and student service offices on campus.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Ability to utilize knowledge of current principles and practices used in academic advising, retention programs/services, and the field of student development. Advise and counsel students with knowledge of the General Education/Major curriculum and registration systems used at CSULB. Ability to develop programs and services related to academic achievement, retention, learning communities, or student success initiatives. Specific experience in developing programs a must. Ability to plan and organize a multitude of tasks and projects and collaborate with a variety of students, professional staff, faculty, offices, and programs. Retention, and Graduation services to all constituencies, develop and deliver essential information through written and oral presentations. Ability to operate as a team member of a high traffic; high demand student-centered office/program. Ability to effectively use and operate computer systems/platforms, E-mail, Internet, and university CMS/E-advising systems. Able to work flexible hours, including evenings, is desired.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related field and two (2) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required. Demonstrated academic advising experience in a college setting, preferred.

Compensation
The hiring range for this position is from $4,304 to $5,000 per month based on experience. The salary range for this classification is $4,304 to $6,120 per month.

Time Base
Full-time temporary position until June 30, 2023 with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
