Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director of Facilities Management, the Manager of Grounds and Landscape Services is responsible for planning and managing the University's grounds maintenance and landscape program, including waste hauling, recycling, and interior pest management.
Key Responsibilities

  • Provide general and specific direction and leadership to the University in grounds and landscape services, irrigation, athletic fields, waste hauling, recycling, and pest management. Develop policies and procedures related to grounds personnel and operational functions. Develop lists of tasks and frequencies by position.
  • Plan and coordinate the work of grounds personnel using effective leadership/management strategies to ensure maximum productivity and creativity.
  • Manage staff assigned to the Grounds and Landscaping Department with effective employee relations planning and execution, composition and disbursement of performance evaluations, absence management and recruitment operations.
  • Prepare budget detail material, equipment, and labor to support new and existing programs and projects and various other reports. Evaluate and recommend purchase of new equipment and material. Administer fiscal activities for grounds area tracking expenditures, personnel, training, and O/E.
  • Administer contracts with outside vendors and the in-house operations for trash, street sweeping, and other grounds related contracts, as appropriate
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
The selected candidate must possess the capability to deal effectively with individuals and groups on and off campus, including administrators, managers, staff, customers, and peers. Must have the ability to analyze complex problems and situations and make appropriate recommendations; understand the complex relationships of individual campus department needs, restrained budgets, and external requirements. Must possess exceptional communication and leadership skills. The selected candidate must have a customer service orientation and be able to provide consistent leadership to the department and campus. Comprehensive knowledge and of horticultural and landscape techniques and methods encountered on campus. Thorough knowledge of equipment and materials available for landscape maintenance program. Experience in contract management. Excellent writing skills with the ability to write and compile reports in a clear and concise manner. Experience in planting and cultivating trees, lawns, and shrubs in a university or large institutional setting. Experience in the maintenance and care of general use athletic fields as well as collegiate level sports surfaces such as soccer, baseball, and track.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in Horticulture, Facilities Management, Landscape Services, Public Administration, or related field. Knowledge of California and Federal laws and regulations regarding solid waste, household, and industrial hazardous waste, with emphasis on recycling and waste prevention. Knowledge of recycle markets. Five years (5) management experience in grounds maintenance, nursery, or landscape work in a large institutional setting. Thorough knowledge of sound and effective management techniques. Five years (5) supervisory experience of a grounds staff including the sub-specialties of irrigation, pest control, and tree trimming.
Licenses / Certificates
CA Driver's License required. Appropriate certificates and licenses in the areas of pest control, irrigation, and landscaping. Active QAL or QAC with CA Department of Pesticide Regulations or the ability to obtain within two years of hire date.
