Usual duties:
The Department of Theatre and Musical Theatre seeks a tenure-track assistant professor specializing in costume design and technology. Teaching assignments include costume design and costume construction/technology courses, stage makeup, and costume history. Based on departmental needs, teaching assignments may also include play analysis and theatre appreciation. Additionally, this hire will provide costume designs and, with the support of a full-time costume shop supervisor and student employees, prepare costumes for departmental productions. Required faculty service will include academic advising and mentoring of costume design majors, recruitment, committee work, and service to the university. Continuous external creative and research activities are required for promotion and tenure.

Degree Requirements:
Terminal degree required. An MFA in Costume Design, Costume Technology, Costume Production, or a related field with documented skills as a theatre teacher and artist is required.

Experience Requirements:
Professional experience in costume technology, design, and construction is required. In addition, candidates should possess a record of successful teaching and creative design. Other skills preferred include knowledge of historical dress (including non-Western/global traditions), makeup for the stage, costume draping, pattern drafting, advanced costume construction, knowledge of costume crafts (millinery, fabric dyeing techniques, and wigs), ability to use current and emerging technologies, and skills in the maintenance and organization of a costume stock.

Other Requirements for the Position:
Essential to this position is the ability to work collaboratively as a team member in production, contribute to new curricula in design technologies, and encourage and support individuals from diverse communities and cultures. Service is an integral aspect of the position, including mentoring student costume designers, academic advising of majors, active recruitment, participation in departmental meetings and activities, and service on committees at the departmental, college, and university levels.
