Minimum Qualifications:

1) MLS/MLIS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution is required at the time of application.

2) Experience providing instruction in-person and/or virtually.

3) Experience providing reference and research services in-person and/or virtually.

4) Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students in a multicultural/multiethnic urban campus environment with a substantial population of first-generation students.

Preferred Qualifications:

1) College coursework or a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the social science disciplines (e.g., psychology, sociology, political science, anthropology, geography, etc.).

2) Demonstrated understanding of the information needs and methods of inquiry in social sciences and related interdisciplinary fields.

3) Familiarity or demonstrated experience with using inclusive pedagogies that engage students.

4) Experience with collection development, including familiarity with information resources relevant to the social sciences.

5) Evidence of experience providing information literacy instruction grounded in information literacy standards and frameworks (e.g., ACRL's Framework of Information Literacy for Higher Education).


The primary activities of library faculty members are: professional librarian responsibilities; research, scholarship, or creative activity; and service to the University, the profession, and the community.

The Social Sciences Librarian will serve as one of the library subject liaisons to the College of Natural and Social Sciences by providing information literacy instruction and research consultation services (in-person and virtual) and evaluating, selecting, and reviewing information resources that support the teaching, learning, scholarship, research, and creative inquiries of students and faculty. Liaisons establish and maintain effective communication and engagement with students, faculty, and staff in their respective areas. The Social Sciences Librarian will collaborate with faculty, librarians, and campus partners in the development of instructional materials, including digital learning objects, and will participate in the assessment of library services that support student success. The librarian may also contribute to library engagement activities and initiatives. Additionally, liaisons participate in general reference, including operating the library chat service.

Service to the University generally includes working collaboratively and productively with colleagues on college, university-wide, and/or system-wide committees, and participating in traditional academic functions such as Convocation and Commencement.

Appointment and Salary:

Appointment: This is a probationary, full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at the Senior Assistant Librarian rank.

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience (anticipated hiring range: $84,048 - $90,996 annually).

Librarians in the CSU system enjoy full faculty status and as such are eligible for campus service opportunities, sabbatical and other leaves, and additional benefits. Librarians are represented under Unit 3 of the California Faculty Association (CFA).
