Assistant Director of Graduate and Professional Studies

Iowa Wesleyan University is seeking an Assistant Director for Online Programs to provide assistance with overall leadership for the planning, development, implementation, staffing, quality assurance, and student/faculty services supporting online instruction for the University. The individual in this position will play a leadership role on campus, helping to enhance and grow online programs across the University.


  • Works with the Director of Graduate and Professional Students to design and implement projects, conduct strategic-planning activities related to online learning, and maintain necessary operational resources.
  • Provides a full range of operational support to ensure the success of online programs including, but not limited to, determining annual timelines and calendars; establishing workflow processes; developing and maintaining course schedules; creating student and faculty agreements, handbooks, policies and procedures; maintaining student rosters and records; and resolving student issues and concerns.
  • Collaborates with the Director to develop and implement ways to evaluate measures of program success--including enrollment goals, quality, effectiveness, and sustainability.
  • Works with the Director and Online Enrollment Advisors on recruitment initiatives.
    • Assists in program development and tracking
    • Travels to various locations to meet with local businesses and prospect students
  • Maintains the current LMS: Canvas, and the supporting technological resources, including:
    • Term structure and creation of new terms
    • Naming conventions
    • Effective course development
    • Sufficient bandwidth for high demand periods
  • Manages technological resources and provides recommendations for updates when needed.
  • Works with on-campus, students and faculty on LMS training and technical support
  • Works collaboratively with the University Registrar’s staff to ensure accurate representation of credits. Follows IW policies at all times regarding transfer credit, transcript acceptance, course substitutions, and other general advising issues while preparing degree plans for distance learners. Ensure accurate, timely, consistent, and effective communication of information to all advisees.
  • Facilitates with overall retention efforts of the University including, but not limited to: data audits, university withdrawals, re-admissions, mid-term grade checks, and registration hold reviews.
  • Ensure that University policies are followed by having a thorough knowledge of all policies and procedures outlined in the University handbook, advising manual and Academic Catalog.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and university guidelines regarding academic advising, degree plans, and degree completion.
  • Maintain current knowledge of all IW programs, with emphasis on knowledge about the GPS/IW Online programs.
  • Collaborates in the development of an advising manual/site and resources to assure accurate and consistent information.
  • Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Maintains competency and professional currency through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the assistant dean.
  • Professionally represents Iowa Wesleyan University to internal and external constituents, including students, prospective students, companies, organizations, and faculty.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Master’s Degree required.
  • Professional work experience within a higher education setting in an academic advising and/or retention-related position preferred.
  • Experience working in an online degree program or taking online courses is preferred.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and experience in teaching or training, preferably at the college/university level is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and human relations skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Multi-task, prioritize, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to utilize technology, including student management systems, degree audit systems, learning management system, and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment and adapt well to change. Must be able to abide by FERPA regulations and maintain confidentiality.
  • Recognizes the importance of service, quality and customer satisfaction in all facets of their work.
  • The ability to travel and work evening and weekend hours as needed/requested.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
