Educational and Experience Requirement Bachelor’s degree in related field. Master’s degree preferred. Five years of experience in a related field. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.
Nature & Purpose of Position Plans, organizes, and directs the day-to-day operations of First-Year Initiatives in the Academic Success Center with the oversight of the Director. Performs highly complex managerial work providing direction and guidance in strategic operations and planning in the department.
Primary Responsibilities Provides leadership for staff, peer educators, and others in the pursuit of providing exceptional learning community experiences and embedded mentoring services for all first-year students (first-time freshman and transfer students). Collaborates with campus partners to create and enhance equitable learning community opportunities for students. Provides oversight for development, marketing, enrollment, and implementation of first-year academic initiatives including learning communities, and peer educator support in and outside of academic success courses. Oversees schedules, priorities, and standards for achieving goals. Evaluates success of program goals, objectives, and outcomes for continuous improvement. Assists in leading the SHSU Common Reader program through committee and event collaborations. Incorporates SHSU Common Reader activities into learning community and peer mentor programming. Develops and assesses peer mentor professional development programs that include support with written lesson plans, success plans and other written guidance for peer mentor/student client success. Assists in curriculum development of student success courses. Develops and implements techniques for evaluating program activities. Oversees and approves schedules, priorities, and standards for achieving goals. Monitors budget expenditures. Oversees the preparation of management and productivity reports and studies. Develops and implements techniques for evaluating program activities. Develops, implements, and evaluates policies and procedures and oversees compliance. Represents the Academic Success Center/First-Year Experience office at orientations, Saturday at Sam, and other recruiting and promotional events relevant to department goals. Serves on various University committees and ad hoc committees as assigned. Makes decisions independently under the authority of the Director and when the Director is absent. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws. Ability to manage business functions.
