SQL Developer

Ball State University

Ball State University’s Office of Institutional research and Decision Support is welcoming applications for a SQL Developer.

Position Function: The position’s primary responsibilities include development and generation of complex data extracts from the Ball State Student Information System (Oracle/Ellucian Banner) in order to populate and maintain the BSU data warehouse environment. This position will help address institutional reporting and decision support needs and mandated compliance reporting. This work defines, creates and publishes institutional data views to serve the campus. These data views serve as the ‘official’ data representations for BSU to external stakeholders. Additionally, the university administration relies upon this work for decision support and evaluative analytics.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, management information systems, or a related quantitative research field from an accredited institution. Two years-experience working in higher education, nonprofit, or public sector developing and maintaining data reporting systems and infrastructure. Strong technical expertise in data management, development of database applications and understanding of business intelligence and relational database concepts. Experience using SQL, MS Access, Visual Basic, statistical software package (SPSS/SAS) or other relational database reporting tools. Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint. Must be adept at learning new technologies and functionality of new systems.

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications: Earned graduate degree from an accredited institution of higher education with a focus in measurement, psychology, economics, computer science, data analytics, data science, business analytics, operations research, statistics, or related field. Knowledge of Higher Education business environments, specifically Institutional Research and ERP systems (e.g. Banner). Strong technical expertise in data management, knowledge of statistical analysis and understanding of business intelligence and relational database concepts. Experience working with large relational databases, data warehouses, data marts, and OLAP technologies. Ability to independently identify and solve problems, analyze complex topics, problem solve, synthesize, and communicate the results clearly both orally and in writing to our various audiences. A curious, creative, and flexible approach to data infrastructure that allows for results at varying levels of precision. Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint along with familiarity with statistical packages (e.g. SPSS, SAS, R). Must be adept at learning new technologies and functionality of new systems. Ability to create visual and tabular reports using software applications (e.g. Tableau).
