Director of the Honors Program

Iowa Wesleyan University is seeking a Director for their Honors Program to provide institutional leadership in the development and management of an Honors Program that will cultivate excellence among high-achieving undergraduates. This is an exempt, at-will position that includes the university benefits package.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborates with departments and colleges in connecting Honors students with academic opportunities at the University. Assists department chairs with the development of honors curricula, including new courses and extra coursework in existing courses.
  • Communicates with internal and external communities about Honors Program activities, achievements, and opportunities.
  • Works with the Admissions Office on the recruitment and admission of students into the Honors Program, including meeting goals for enrollment created in cooperation with VP for Enrollment, Marketing, and Communications.
  • Coordinates extracurricular experiences that will nurture the talents and academic well-being of high achieving students (i.e. field trips, theatre, musical events, museums, etc).
  • Provides leadership in orienting and advising Honors students, monitoring their adherence to basic requirements and their progress towards graduation, and arranging for support and interventions as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with the administration and office of Student Development in the development of leadership programs for all Iowa Wesleyan students.
  • Develops and implements plans to assess the effectiveness of the Honors Program.
  • Prepares and manages Honors budget, monitoring and approving expenditures.
  • Works with the Office of Advancement and External Relations on fundraising initiatives.
  • Fosters membership and participation in local, regional, and national Honors Societies.
  • Teach two courses per semester in consultation with the Provost Office.
  • Oversee development of Honors Program website.
  • Serve on University Committees as deemed appropriate.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • A Ph.D. is desired but a master’s degree and previous experience with an honors program is required.

  • Experience working in a higher education setting is preferred.
  • Ability to work well with people -- students, faculty and administration.
  • Organizational knowledge
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Ability to have initiative and commitment to academic excellence within a diverse learning community.
  • Ability and willingness to work some evenings and weekends.
