Job Description

The Fleishman Center seeks an Assistant Director for Career Consulting and Diversity Engagement to support career consulting for the University, with a focus on programming and outreach to support underserved student populations and will provide diversity and inclusion education and programming. The Assistant Director will provide supervision to professional staff, as well as graduate and undergraduate student staff.

The Assistant Director will manage and guide career consulting efforts in the Fleishman Center. Career consultants provide transformational career coaching to graduate and undergraduate students, build relationships with campus partners, and contribute to students' career knowledge through requested programs and content creation. The Assistant Director will be responsible for meeting with students, providing ongoing professional development for all student-facing staff, and serving as a resource and guide for challenges and question encountered while working with students. The Assistant Director also will support the training of students serving as peer career consultants and graduate student career consultants.

The individual will also collaborate with a team to develop initiatives, programs and resources that connect students of color, first-generation students, and low-income students with networks and opportunities that promote career readiness and success. Additionally, this position will lead the development of resources and initiatives that enable all Binghamton University students to develop global/intercultural fluency and understand equity and inclusion in the workplace. A key aspect of working in the Fleishman Center is the ability to build strong, collaborative partnerships with faculty and departments. In particular, the assistant director will build and further partnerships with campus leaders for diversity, equity, and inclusion, including student leaders.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Managing the Student Affairs Internship Fund which supports unpaid internships for students with financial need
  • Collaborating with International Student and Scholar Services on career-related resources and programs that meet the current needs of International Students
  • Contributing to two Career Cluster teams in the Fleishman Center and curating content and resources for these clusters


  • Master's degree and 2-4 years of professional experience
  • Experience supervising professional staff and/or student/paraprofessional staff
  • Experience providing direct career support for students
  • Knowledge of student development, career development theories, and approaches to counseling and coaching students
  • Demonstrated experience working cooperatively and collaboratively with students, employers, staff and faculty with diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work both independently and within a team
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with career assessments such a MBTI, Strong and Focus2
  • Organizational and operational skills to plan and oversee programming and assessments
  • Evidence of commitment to college student success
  • Must share core values of campus collaboration, high ethical standards and dedication to what is best for students, employers and Binghamton University

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in a higher education, career coaching or a related field and 4 plus years of experience working in higher education, preferably in career services and/or experiential education
  • Preferred knowledge of career management and higher education systems, such as Handshake and Banner
  • Self-starting, creative professional with the ability to create and maintain collaborative relationships and adapt to change while handling multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Advanced knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling process, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques
