Job Summary
The Senior Associate Director of New Student and Family Programs is responsible for the co-creation of vision, leadership, strategic direction, administration, and supervision of the orientation team, in designing, implementing, and administering services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life.
This will be done through orientation, First-Year experience to include Beach Guides, intentional efforts geared towards second year students and programming for families along with other innovative programs to build a stronger sense of belonging to help increase our retention and graduation rates.
Additionally, the position oversees strategic planning efforts, goal setting processes, assessment of department services and programs, and the creation and implementation of student learning outcomes in alignment with the goals of Student Affairs (DSA) and the University. The Senior Associate Director will work collaboratively throughout Student Affairs and across campus, including the Advising, Enrollment Services, and Institutional Research Departments to ensure that data is collected and utilized for programmatic effectiveness and focused on student success.
Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and management of programs for first- and second- year students and their families.
- Provide guidance and support to first- and second- year students through academic advising, mentoring, and coaching.
- Participate in outreach and recruitment to engage prospective students, families, and community partners, with the goal of increasing access to higher education and promoting the mission and values of the institution.
Experience in collaborative planning, implementing and program evaluation. Experience with budgeting and cost analysis. Experience of progressively responsible student affairs work. Excellent organizational, leadership, and management skills. Thorough understanding of test programs, executive orders, and regulations for all levels of students. Experience in developing strategic plans. Proven ability to maintain strong working relationships with staff, faculty, and administrators. Ability to solve complex problems. Outstanding communication skills including written, verbal and presentation skills. Ability to speak in public. Ability to develop, implement and evaluate various programs offered within the department. Experience working with college students and their families from diverse backgrounds. Knowledge of college student development and its implementation of practice effectively with a wide range of students, faculty and students. Understanding of peer mentoring and its components. Skill in supervising a diverse professional and support staff, graduate, and undergraduate student workers. Ability to work well in highly active, growth oriented, team environment. Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of students, faculty, and staff. Demonstrate ability to work and thrive in a multi-cultural environment. Knowledge of campus-wide systems including applications of technology where appropriate. Understanding of multimedia presentation software, Internet, and the World Wide Web applications, database management and spreadsheet software required. Expertise in testing and evaluation, including program review and student learning outcomes. Extensive knowledge of student development and learning practices, policies, theories, and the operations of student services departments in higher education. Ability to work collaboratively with a wide array of campus constituencies. Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and communicate clearly and effectively with students, staff, peers, administrators, campus and University personnel, clients, state officials, vendors, professionals, management, etc. Ability to work as part of a team through close collaboration with colleagues and coordinate with others. Ability to work effectively and productively as part of a team. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Ability to work occasional weekends or evenings.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Education and Experience
Five (5) years of experience in a managerial role required. Higher education experience preferred. Master's Degree preferred. Minimum of three (3) years of experience in first-year experience and orientation or a closely related field.
Physical Summary
Light work - Job involves some lifting of medium weight objects (10-20 pounds) and/or 10% - 20% of the job involves standing or walking.
Licenses / Certificates
Valid CA Driver's License preferred. Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

Compensation
Salary Range: $5,722 - $8,583 per month
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
