The Department of Communication Studies at Sam Houston University invites interpersonal communication scholars to submit applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin Fall semester 2023.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. (in hand by August 2023) in Communication Studies, a record of conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications that strongly indicates future success in scholarly research, evidence of excellent teaching, a record of service, and the ability to teach courses that will contribute to our undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Where appropriate, the candidate will be expected to collaborate with colleagues to advance the research mission of Sam Houston State University through pursuit of internal and external funding, strategic development initiatives, and collaborative partnerships.

The department seeks to hire an interpersonal communication scholar who complements our current interpersonal faculty and is an empiricist with expertise in quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methodologies. We would be particularly interested in an interpersonal teacher/scholar whose research focuses on, but is not limited to, topics such as one or more of the following: conflict and negotiation, applied communication, organizational communication, environmental/science communication, sport communication, and/or interpersonal relationships and technology.

The position will require teaching communication theory and research methods classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels. University-level teaching experience is desirable. Experience in online teaching is a positive qualification. The teaching load is three courses per semester including graduate teaching.

The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and/or service as well as candidates who possess a deep interest in teaching.

Our department offers both a BA and BS in Communication Studies and an online MA in Communication Studies with a strong interpersonal communication focus. The department prepares students for a variety of fields, including teaching at all levels, public advocacy, public relations, governmental relations, ministry, and law.
