Position

The College of Liberal Arts invites applications for a tenure track, 9-month Assistant Professor position in the Department of Geography and Environmental Planning beginning August 2023.

Qualifications

PhD in geography or cognate field. ABD considered, but appointment will be at the instructor rank and all degree requirements must be completed by February 2024. Candidates should have expertise in urban sustainability, broadly defined, and demonstrate ability to contribute to research on urban adaptation to climate change. The ideal candidate will conduct holistic research on physical climate sustainability and adaptability in urban environments that recognizes the uneven vulnerability to climate change caused by social and political inequality.

Towson University strives to enhance its research standing in the Carnegie classification. Successful candidates will teach a 3/3 load and be expected to seek external funding as well establish a consistent record of scholarly publications. Successful candidates will also be expected to include students in research when possible and enhance the department’s curricular offerings in the realm of urban sustainability.

Successful applicants will be expected to teach courses such as introductory physical geography, environmental impact analysis, and environmental hazards, as well as develop new courses on urban sustainability and adaptation. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to a proposed new interdisciplinary PhD program in Environmental, Social, and Homeland Security based in the College of Liberal Arts. Opportunities exist for contributing to other academic programs such as Environmental Science and Studies, Metropolitan Studies, Sociology, and Anthropology.

The Department (http://www.towson.edu/cla/departments/geography) offers majors in Geography, Geography and Land Surveying. Minors in Geographic Information Sciences, Climate, Weather, and Society, and Geography are also offered. The Department also offers a graduate MA in Geography and Environmental Planning.
