Job Summary

Under the direction of the Sustainability Manager, the Sustainability Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and coordinating sustainability practices and programs across the university. The Sustainability Specialist will develop plans for achieving University sustainability goals, conduct analysis of current operations and practices, research best practices and areas for improvement, and create reports on sustainability efforts and initiatives. Sustainability programs include energy efficiency, water conservation projects, bike and pedestrian circulation, recycling and zero waste initiatives, campus and community engagement, and collaborative sustainability-focused academic projects.

The Incumbent will take a lead role in engaging students, faculty and staff in sustainability programs, initiatives, events, and training programs and will support the President's Commission on Sustainability and its various subcommittees to achieve university sustainability goals.

With limited supervision by the Sustainability Manager, the incumbent is responsible for developing and supporting efforts to work within and across all units and boundaries of the University to foster partnerships between academic programs and University administrations/operations to institutionalize sustainability values and resource conservation. This position takes a lead role in coordinating events, service learning, Campus as a Living Lab, and other outreach programs designed to raise awareness and increase stakeholder engagement in sustainability at CSULB.
Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and coordinate plans, programs and initiatives to meet campus sustainability needs.
  • Apply technical knowledge of sustainability evaluation criteria and standards to conduct data collection, tracking, and reporting related to sustainability programs, plans and assessments.
  • Support implementation and development of initiatives sponsored by the President's Commission on Sustainability (PCS), subcommittees and ad hoc working groups.
  • Maintain sustainability communications, events and outreach, awareness and education programs for the campus community.
  • Oversee recruitment, onboarding, training and supervision of student assistants and support student involvement in the sustainability program, initiatives, activities, class projects, and student groups/clubs.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Ability to independently determine methods to meet sustainability goals and requirements on campus. Demonstrated knowledge of sustainability issues and concepts at the local, national, and global level. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing. Ability to develop and deliver presentations and papers in both informal and formal settings. Ability to work with various and diverse constituencies to identify issues, develop working relationships and consensus building to recognize common goals, implementing program initiatives and procedures/processes that advance the goals and values of sustainability. Demonstrated leadership abilities and record of success in program development, planning, implementation, and project management. Demonstrated skills in decision making, judgment, discretion, and confidentiality. Strong problem solving and analytical skills. Ability to demonstrate capabilities in finding and applying for sustainability grants and funding. Knowledge and experience coordinating energy efficiency, water conservation) and waste reduction projects. Demonstrated experience recruiting, hiring, and supervising student assistants and Interns. Ability to maintain and report progress on multiple projects and tasks and adjust to short and often changing deadlines.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of related experience required.

Compensation

The salary range for this classification is $5,022 to $9,083 per month.
Benefits

Excellent benefits through CalPERS (health, vision, dental), tuition fee waiver, generous vacation and sick leave, and 14 paid holidays each year.
Time Base

Full-time temporary position for one year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
