Job Description

The Department of Special Education invites applications for a full-time Assistant Lecturer/Assistant Teaching Professor available for the 2022-23 academic year, with the potential for an initial 3-year contract based upon qualifications. This contract is renewable for two additional years after the initial three-year contract. Our department is seeking faculty with strong interpersonal skills who value collaborative teaching approaches to promote cross-disciplinary knowledge that will serve our graduates in their careers. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrable teaching skills in guiding the growth of academic programs and curricula and working experience in teaching.

Position Function: The faculty member shall have responsibility for teaching introductory courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the area of American Sign Language. Also, the individual will assume other related duties as assigned including:

  1. Planning, preparing, and delivering lessons.
  2. Participation in on campus departmental, college, and/or university meetings, and committees.
  3. Work surrounding ASL Lab.
  4. Other duties typically expected of a faculty member.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Earned MA or MS degree in American Sign Language Studies, Deaf/Deaf Culture Studies or related field from an accredited institution.
  2. Minimum of 3 years of ASL teaching experience in University or College setting.
  3. ASLPI score of 4 or better in American Sign Language (ASL).

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge and experience in various ASL curricula, materials, and resources.
  2. Have a Doctorate in American Sign Language/Deaf Studies/Linguistics/Adult Education related field.
  3. ASLPI 4+ or better.
  4. Experience working in ASL Lab
  5. Familiar with Technology such as Microsoft Office Suite, Canvas or other LMS, and video recording and editing tools.
  6. Have a strong involvement in the Deaf community.
