Under the supervision of the Director of EOP & Guardian Scholars, Associate Director, and led by the Associate Director of Retention & Special Projects, the EOP Counselor provides a range of comprehensive academic advising and counseling services to program students. The EOP Counselor is responsible for the coordination of the EOP 100 course curriculum, faculty hiring, and training; and for the coordination and oversight of the EOP Peer Advisor component. The incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life. As an EOP Counselor, the incumbent uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.
- Provide generalist academic advising and personal counseling to all EOP students.
- Coordinate the EOP 100 Instructional component.
- Coordinate the EOP Peer Advising component.
Supervisory experience 3+ years highly preferred. Experience with developing and editing course curriculum content for first-year course. Experience with developing and overseeing Academic Peer Advisor component. Experience working in a fast-paced office environment. Must be detail oriented. Lead experience with students, professional staff, and volunteers. Ability to develop and plan large-scale workshops and programming. Basic working knowledge of financial aid process and policies. Exercises professional judgment to determine treatment of exceptional circumstances. Knowledge of PeopleSoft and Beach connect to monitor academic progress of participants preferred. Experience with developing and editing course curriculum. Knowledge of the University admission procedures and requirements to equity programs. Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, excel, and other Microsoft related software. Working knowledge of Beach Board and Beach Sync. Ensure confidentiality to students who request or are identified as requiring such assistance. Use sound judgment in interpreting issues, initiate referrals to other campus offices, departments, individuals, and programs which can provide assistance as appropriate. Develop and implement other projects related to retention and/or overall program goals and efforts. Ability to work with diverse faculty, staff, and student populations. Ability to work as part of a team through close collaboration with colleagues and coordinate with others. Ability to work effectively and productively as part of a team by establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships and maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Ability to consistently report to work on time prepared to perform the duties of the position. Working knowledge of standard safe work practices. Thorough knowledge of office systems and ability to use a broad range of technology, systems, and software applications. Excellent oral communication skills and effective interpersonal skills required. Incumbent must have experience processing, answering and following-up as needed with office mail, phone calls, email and in-person visitors. Must be able to respond to complex inquiries from the public, residents, parents, prospective residents, CSULB employees and students. Due to telephone and in-person interactions, must possess the ability to understand, interpret and respond (orally and in writing) to a broad range of complex issues, procedures, policies, ideas, information and instructions. Excellent writing and editing skills (including grammar, sentence construction and vocabulary) to compose and proofread professional level copy of letters, proposals, reports, meeting notes, invitations, and announcements. Outstanding grammar, typing, and proofreading skills. Skill in reading standard English for understanding information (e.g. business correspondence, legal and contract documents and University manuals, policies, procedures, and regulations). Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships & communicate clearly & effectively with vendors, staff, peers, administrators, campus personnel, clients, state officials, and the public. Skill in developing, implementing, and assuring compliance with office and University policies and procedures while maintaining good working relationships with staff at all levels within and external to the University. Demonstrated skill in conducting research, developing reports, and presenting findings. Skill in analyzing information, problems, situations, practices, and procedures to define problem or objective, identify relevant concerns or factors, formulate logical objective conclusions, recognize alternatives and their implications and in generating solutions to problems as they arise. Skill in sound time management including prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner. Flexibility with changes in workload, under pressure of deadlines, competing requirements, heavy workload, and constant interruptions. Ability to work under pressure and remain calm and focused, and to calm and give focus to others in an extremely hectic fast-paced work environment. Skill in analyzing information, problems, situations, practices, or procedures to define the problem or objective; identify concerns or factors, patterns, relationships; formulate logical and objective conclusions; and recognize alternatives and their implications. Ability to exercise sound judgment and handle confidential matters with tact and diplomacy and maintain confidentiality of information as needed or to protect the rights of individuals. Skill in working independently with minimal direction, in setting priorities and schedules and in identifying and adhering to departmental objectives. Ability to apply independent, reasoned judgment, discretion, and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough, and technically accurate solutions. Experience with a broad range of Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel, PowerPoint, Visio) and Adobe software to ensure that incumbent will be able to prepare a wide variety of correspondence, reports, forms, brochures, flyers, agendas, minutes, advertisements and text for printed materials and web pages. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe Contribute and HTML would be a plus. Ability to interpret and apply financial aid and academic policies and procedures. Contribute to equitable and inclusionary work to support student-success that strengthen on retention and graduation. Must be able to carry program materials and equipment (up to 25lbs) to on and off campus events.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Education and Experience
Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields and three (3) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required. Five (5) years of progressive and extensive experience in academic advising, counseling, and supervisory role, highly preferred. Graduate degree in Student Development & Higher Education (SDHE) or closely related graduate degree, preferred.
Licenses / Certificates
Possession of a valid California Driver's License or be eligible to obtain one in order to operate a University vehicle and attend outreach events required.
Student Services Professional III
The salary range for this classification is $4,879 to $6,950 per month.
Excellent benefits through CalPERS (health, vision, dental), tuition fee waiver, generous vacation and sick leave, and 14 paid holidays each year.
Full-time temporary position for one (1) year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
