Job Summary
This position provides research support to Shark Lab field operations including shark tagging, active tracking, receiver data, AUV and UAV data analysis and design formation. This position will also support graduate student research by providing field assistance and mentoring. Assist with field operations, data management and analysis. Assist with report and manuscript writing.
Key Responsibilities
- To assist with all field operations including shark tagging and tracking, acoustic receiver array deployment and maintenance, AUV and UAV deployments, and data collection.
Knowledge of principles of experimental design; knowledge of the common principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline; knowledge of the materials, supplies and equipment and their uses related to the discipline. Ability to evaluate the materials and supplies used; ability to plan activities and prepare schedules, ability to use methods, techniques and skills related to the discipline in collection of data. Skills in marine electronics, basic plumbing, carpentry and electrical repair, computer programming, and statistical analysis. Ability to train and supervise others.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
A PhD (or higher) degree in Marine Science or related discipline from an accredited institution, and the equivalent of three (3) or more years of experience in marine field operations, providing data management and data analysis (spatial and temporal) and coordinating and managing field crews. Research experience using acoustic and satellite telemetry, biologging technology, and shark capture and handling experience, and data maintenance experience. Experience in programming in R, Python, Matlab and/or ArcGIS, managing and processing large datasets. Experience in the field use of small power-driven vessels (<30' LOA), or comparable experience in coastal waters, with U.S. Coast Guard Boating Safety Certificate or MOTC/MOCC Certificate.
Licenses / Certificates
California Driver's License; AAUS certification for Scientific SCUBA; and CSU Defensive Driving Course.

Up to $5,000 per month, commensurate with experience.

Time Base
Full-time temporary position for one (1) year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
