Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Housing Facilities, the Refrigeration & Building Engineer provides skilled work necessary for daily operations and preventative maintenance to all mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, boilers, HVAC systems, and food service equipment to ensure that the equipment is functioning at its optimum capacity. Incumbent performs various duties related to refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, specializing in electrical, electronic, pneumatic controls, and testing of equipment. Responds to all emergency equipment related issues immediately and ensures that the equipment is repaired in a timely manner with the least impact to staff and residents for the Housing and Residential Life buildings, including the dining halls. Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance & Repair of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, and Boiler Systems
- Installation of equipment and preventative maintenance
Knowledge of and experience inspecting and adjusting HVAC systems and experience overhauling various equipment, pumps, compressors, etc. Knowledge of and ability to work on systems from fractional H.P. to large tonnage. Ability to read and interpret technical material. Ability to operate tools and equipment specific to this trade. Working knowledge of electrical safety lockout procedures and basic electrical/electronic tools and electronic/pneumatic instrumentation, VOM meter, refrigeration gauges, and other trade-related tools. Ability to read and interpret schematic drawings. Skill in modifying or adapting building systems for efficient and economical operation. Working knowledge of UBC, OSHA, and ADA requirements as they relate to the trade. Knowledge of basic algebra concepts and principles sufficient to understand and apply trade formulas. Working knowledge of personal computer and software sufficient to review computerized building and maintenance management systems. Must have general knowledge of the theory and operation of major types of steam and gas boilers, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, automated controls, and of the materials, equipment and techniques used in their maintenance and repair. Working knowledge of standard safe work practices. Must have a full understanding of fire safety related equipment. Ability to distinguish among colors. Must possess California Driver's License, Class C, and ability to drive a truck or other light vehicle in the course of duties. Working knowledge of UBC, OSHA, and ADA requirements as they relate to the trade. Understanding of ADA and Fire/Life Safety Codes at each job and report to supervisor. Basic writing skills sufficient to complete forms and job status reports that are accurate and easy to comprehend. Ability to communicate in writing and verbally work-related matters to appropriate HRL stakeholders.

Education and Experience
Equivalent to a high school diploma and Journey-level installation, adjustment, maintenance, and repair of commercial and domestic refrigeration, air conditioning systems involving modulatory and safety controls, thermostats, humidifiers, and duct stats, as well as one (1) year of experience in the installation and repair of central multi-zone air conditioning systems required.
Licenses / Certificates
Valid California driver's license. EPA Certificate Motor vehicles Section 609. Possession of EPA 608 Universal Technician Certification. Possession of Unlimited Steam License highly preferred. CFC Universal Certificate.

The salary range for this classification is $6,464 to $8,196 per month.
