Position:

The department of History at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track assistant professor in U.S. History of the Civil War era, Reconstruction, or the Gilded Age with a preferred teaching and research emphasis on issues of race or gender. The successful candidate will be expected to teach either half of the U.S. History survey course, to contribute to the department's public history program, and to develop undergraduate and graduate courses in their areas of specialization. Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and scholarship; evidence of teaching excellence and strong scholarly potential is required. Candidates must also be committed to teaching a diverse student population and to achieving excellence through equity and inclusion.

Normal teaching load is 12 units per semester. In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and the Department of History for purposes of tenure and promotion.



Required Qualifications:

As a Hispanic-serving Institution (HSI), inclusiveness and diversity are integral to CSUN's commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement. The successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

  • PhD from an accredited institution in History or in a related field with a focus on U.S. history. Degree in hand at time of application or official notification of the terminal degree by date of appointment.
  • Evidence of, or clear potential for, excellence in teaching US history courses.
  • Evidence of, or clear potential for, mentoring a diverse student body at the college level.
  • Evidence of, or clear potential for, scholarly publication and growth as well as creative contributions to public history.

  • Research and teaching interests in gender or race.
  • Commitment to contributing to department's public history program.
  • Ability to work with regional institutions and communities as part of teaching and mentoring.

  • Experience creating a student-centered learning environment.

    • Peer-reviewed publications are important for tenure and promotion, and CSUN faculty members can apply for competitive awards that provide courses releases for research or fund travel for research. Presentations at academic conferences are supported with annual travel funds.
    • Tenure-track faculty members participate in shared governance, usually in Department, College, and University committees and other service assignments.
