The School of Art is dedicated to its mission of creating a comprehensive art school experience within the context of a large publicly funded state university. At the undergraduate level, we provide a diverse population of over 1,500 aspiring artists and art scholars with access to affordable, quality education combining a broad-based liberal arts collegiate experience with a firm historical, theoretical, and foundational art curriculum. At the graduate level, our degree programs are designed with a dual emphasis on tailoring programs of study to individual students while fostering shared experience among a community of graduate students. Our faculty is committed to the belief that an education in the visual arts and related scholarship can be grounded in tradition while geared toward innovation; can foster both discipline-centered and interdisciplinary activity and discourse; and can achieve a fusion of informed dialogue, practice, and production.

Required Qualifications:

  • M.F.A. in Drawing or Painting or record of substantial creative/professional achievement or relevant discipline/field. Degree at time of application or official notification of the completion of the degree by August 1, 2023. Substantial creative/professional achievement as demonstrated by portfolio of work and C.V.
  • Awareness of diverse traditions, histories, discourses and contemporary practice in Drawing and Painting and the broader field of contemporary art, and the ability to incorporate this awareness into instruction
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population
  • Active creative/professional practice as demonstrated by portfolio of work and C.V.
  • Demonstrated potential for serving the creative and learning needs of discipline specific BFA and MFA Drawing and Painting students and non-discipline-specific BA Studio Art students
  • Evidence of leadership skills to oversee a discipline-specific program within the School of Art
  • Evidence of ability to collaborate with faculty and students across multiple discipline-specific program areas
  • Evidence of or potential for effective teaching at the college level
  • Ability to teach fundamental drawing and painting skills, techniques, and approaches

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated teaching experience or instructional experience at the college level
  • Evidence of success or potential for success in teaching in one or more of the following: color theory, abstraction, narrative and representational strategies, non-traditional or experimental approaches to drawing or painting, intersection of drawing or painting with emergent technologies, interdisciplinary practices, social and community-based practices, research-based practice and critique.
  • Evidence of communication and organizational skills necessary for future service, course coordination, and program oversight roles within the School of Art.
  • Evidence of success or potential for success in teaching in other studio programs/areas within the School of Art or teaching collaboratively with faculty in disciplines elsewhere within the university
  • Evidence of success or potential for success in teaching innovative college-level courses that are both relevant and engaging to a diverse student body
  • Experience of successfully working with populations demographically and socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body
  • Evidence of successful work with graduate students in Drawing and Painting and other disciplines

Duties:
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in the discipline program and in other areas within the School of Art curriculum [Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.]
  • Mentor and advise students at a broad range of levels from non-majors to MFA candidates
  • Serve on MFA graduate committees
  • Serve as program/area lead for the discipline on a rotating basis
  • Participate in curriculum and program development and keep content current
  • Engage in student outreach through involvement in student activities, portfolio reviews
  • Assist in recruitment, review, and supervision of part-time faculty, technical staff and student assistants
  • Develop and maintain ongoing research, scholarly and creative activities that leads to exhibitions, presentations, publications
  • Act as program liaison with professionals in the field
  • Participate in service to the School of Art, college, university, community, and scholarly/creative/professional field
